The Vario-Elmarit-SL isn't mentioned; as I understand, there is a profile included in the DNG file.

It's actually a great improvement over the embedded profile :

Reds are now correct

Skin tones much better

Greens less saturated and more natural

General slight reduction in saturation .... which is probably closer to reality ..... previously images looked like a touch of the Clarity slider had been employed ....

I installed the update and imported some SL DNGs.

When I enable the automatic profile, Lightroom shows the profiles for Leica M, and there is no option to select SL, only M R and S.

What am I missing here?

Best regards

DNG includes de Profile. When I click "Enable Profile Corrections" I see an adjustment in the picture. Not sure is the best option to have it that way but is a nice improvement.

I believe the correction is applied by default without you having to click on "Enable Profile Corrections". If you see any change when you activate "Enable Profile Corrections" then maybe you have the wrong lens on the lens profile (all this is Lightroom of course). What lens do you see there?

I am referring to the lens corrections her when using M-lenses, Summilux 21 in this case.

I would expect the corrections to be different for the Summilux 21 on an M9 than on the SL?

Possibly sensor specific corrections has already been performed in the SL camera, so that only geometric distortions, chromatic aberrations  and vignetting corrections remains to be done in LR?

There are corrections (e.g. for barrel distortion at the wide angle end of the 24-90) already enclosed in the DNG file.  I use CaptureOne, not LR, and it reads those, does automatic correction (which can be overridden) and puts the type of camera in the EXIF, even though COne does not yet support a color correction profile for the camera.  I haven't tried to see what they will do with an M lens on an SL, assuming that the type of lens was chosen from the SL's menu and is embedded in the DNG file.

Oh, I see, I thought you were talking about the SL native lens. So are you saying that even for M lenses the corrections are in the DNG file and are not the ones found in Lightroom?

It is interesting that Lightroom automatically chooses the right lens using the information in the file, because it does not do it for the T DNG files. So it knows the lens, but when I click "Enable Profile corrections" it says "Unable to locate a matching profile automatically". I will investigate it later just in case I do something wrongly.

Best, D

It was the SL lens 24-90 and applied a small barrel distortion correction. Minimal but it did. I didn't try the M lenses yet.

  • 2 months later...

Up until today, I'm not sure if my Lightroom (latest 2015.4) was doing the right thing with the profile for the native Leica SL 24-90mm zoom.

In the develop module, in the Lens Correction tool, on the Profile tab, "Enable Profile Correction" is ticked but regardless of whether I setup as Auto, Default or Custom, nothing shows in the Make, Model, Profile boxes.

If I select the Setup as Default or Auto, the "info" shows: "Unable to locate a matching profile automatically".

If I select the Setup as Custom, the "info" shows: "Built in Lens Profile applied".  Clicking on the 'i', I see the lens details displayed in a pop up window.

Up until now, I always had Setup as Default.  I have fixed it in my Import develop preset to Custom so it should be OK going forward.

I wonder how much quality I was losing before?  If any?  Can't see much "before and after" difference.  Maybe the profile was always being applied regardless of the Setup setting?

Regards

Peter

I think we've had this discussed with the Leica T and Q ........ the correction profiles are embedded in the DNG and automatically applied.

As such I don't think the custom setup does anything more than display the lens details .......

Adobe don't need to add a lens profile for any of these sort of lenses.

Right.  Capture One, which still has not released a ICC profile to tune the SL's color rendition, handles the distortion corrections automatically because they are embedded in the DNG files as "manufacturer's recommendations."  Leica has also already put these corrections into the DNG for many M and R lenses -- but not quite all of them.

Just checking, so please excuse my ignorance, is the profile for an M-lens attached to the SL included in the generated DNG?  I'm still seeing distortions - I'm using the WATE (16-18-21) on my SL.  Is there a separate correction I should be using in Lightroom?

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

No digital corrections for DNGs created with M lenses on the SL are applied by default in LR when these are opened even though it says that the integrated lens profile is applied. You have to enable profile corrections for the images to change and I'm not even sure if these are Leica corrections that are then applied by LR as it finds the lens profile. This is different for SL DNGs created with native SL lenses. See also the second comment from the top by Jaap here:

Not by default but you can easily change that so LR loads the appropriate profile on importing the files.

Are you sure this is correct ?

The last time I used my WATE I tried to manually activate the lens profile  as an experiment ....... and ended up with very wiggly lines implying it was correcting an already corrected file .....

I have not done anything to LR and corrections seem to be added by default via the DNG data .....
