Christmas Day - trying the SL with the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II at f/1.2:

When I had a Canon DSLR, the 85 1.2 (v1) was one of my favorite lenses. How happy are you with it on the SL?  Does it work well with the adapter? (I assume it is the nova flex?)  Would love to know your thoughts. (Feel free to send me a private message, rather than tie up this thread. Thank you).

So, I finally took the plunge. Living and working in the middle east made it difficult to get any sustained time on a demo camera, and each time I was put off by the bulk of the 24-90mm. But in the end I got a great deal on a kit, threw in a Voigtlander 50mm and used Summicron-M 90mm and adapter, and took to my local souq or market just as it was opening up for the day. I'll get more adapted lenses to try later, including an R or two...

Loving the big EVF which shows real time image in all but low light (where it lags but at least adjusts), the focus peaking, the programmable buttons (esp having ISO on both front and back depending on lens and grip comfort) and the general beautiful build quality.

I'm in a similar position to you - I am considering an SL and thinking that the zoom is bulkier than I'd like to be carrying.

Please share more photos with the Voigtlander, particularly wide open.

Thank you.

Geetee, is that Play Time photo from Stars N Bars in MC?

No it's an arcade just next to the Fairmont Hotel, on the most famous hairpin in Monaco. It has a bowling alley, Starbuck and a McDonalds (which funnily enough is about the only place cheap enough to let us eat and stay within the company's expense policy for dinner!)

By request: 2 more from the SL + Voigtlander f1.4

This one at approx f1.7 and iso 50.

(I assume you all know that the SL can only approximate the aperture. On a few shots I seemed to have an f1.0 Noctilux, but when I looked at the camera it was still the Voigtlander!)

I had the SL on auto ISO so I could control the depth of field with the aperture and control movement blur with a 1/250th shutter, so not exact comparisons, but enough to get a sense of sharpness and DoF for those who want to see it. Of course, the edges have been cropped by using the square format, and the pathetic file upload limits here make it harder still to make comparisons. There is some loss of detail, contrast and sharpness at the wider aperture; as to be expected.

What a difference two f-stops can make!

Summicron-M f2    (1980-98 version)

One at f2, the other at f3.5, both at ISO 50.

Look at the difference in sharpness, contrast and vignetting (even at a 1:1 crop). Also, I noticed a very strong yellow colour cast: so bad I switched to auto WB to stop it completely changing the hue of shots taken with the lens compared to those with others. Remind me again why I paid a premium for this Leica lens?   ;)

The 24-90mm is worth the weight and price. Not just for the flexibility of quick framing changes, and the OIS, but for it's sharpness and clarity. Amazing detail, tonal range and contrast. I should have taken heed of what many other forum contributors wrote on here sooner! The extra wrist-weight is definitely worth it to me. I'll keep the M lenses, when I need to keep a low profile or I want something more impressionistic, or its nice and bright. But when the price for wide aperture and light gathering is a loss of sharpness and contrast, even on a Leica original, they will be second choice to the mighty zoom.

200 ISO, f5, 35mm

I think the price is flexibility in focal length. The gain is the small size and weight of a prime, and yes, light gathering and rendering when you need it. I agree that the mighty zoom is very sharp, but by f5, you won't miss any sharpness with a 35 summicron aspherical either.

Granted.

Coming from years of Nikon where even 'pro' zooms often reinforce the received wisdom 'primes good: zooms bad' it took me over a year to decide that the 24-90mm really wasn't going to cost me sharpness, contrast and clarity compared to the primes. But I am also surprised that the light gathering and rendering of the primes (at least the two I have got) are offset by noticeably poorer image quality at their widest apertures. So I am pleased to note that I am not paying too high a price for being limited to f2.8-4 in the zoom. Two stops of higher ISO isn't any worse than the effect the 2 stops have on prime sharpness and contrast.

I guess my point was less 'look how bad the primes are' and more 'look how good the zoom is'.

Optically, that is. Weight and size is another matter...
