Advertisement Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Hi Neko, Take a look here New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paulus Posted August 5, 2016 Author Share #1002 Posted August 5, 2016 Leica M240 is made for English speaking people. Period. Look at the engraved buttons "PLAY", "DELETE" etc. Am I missing anything? This is a good point and now you mention it. Some Enlish word have entered the German language. Just like in any modern language. It isn't so strange that some words could become German/English , I believe the term in German is Denglish. Especially with the computerwords like " delete" it's a natural this. First time in Japan, I was astonished that the Japanes word for computer was " compjuta " ( or maybe the were just teasing me? ). Same with the word arigato, which has some sound in it like the potugese word obrigado, meaning the same, stemming from the time that portugerse was a world power. I'm not sad, that:" set, iso, delete , play," stands on the back of the M240, but what really annoys me, is that they dismissed the "din" and write only iso on the back of the modern cameras even on the MP! Actually, when they made the M 240 only for englisch speaking people, Leica could have done without the rest of the languages in the menu. What leads me to the question: Why can my Nikon D3 be read in Dutch, but my Leica M 240 only in German ( and some other foreign languages )
jmahto Posted August 5, 2016 Share #1003 Posted August 5, 2016 This gets solved by providing unlabeled buttons as in SL and configurable menu in one's chosen language. A true multi-lingual camera. By keeping manual aperture and shutter speed dial intact, we are not losing any essence of M. In fact removing labeled buttons makes it look more like a film cam. Since I am on a roll, can I suggest bringing back the film advance lever !! By pulling it out slightly, it can act as thumbie and by pushing it in, we can activate the menu with unlabeled buttons around LCD. Won't that be really neat? mjh Posted August 5, 2016 Share #1004 Posted August 5, 2016 Same with the word arigato, which has some sound in it like the potugese word obrigado, meaning the same, stemming from the time that portugerse was a world power. Japanese ‘arigato’ is not at all related to Portugese ‘obrigado’, see for example http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/arigatou.html.
edwardkaraa Posted August 6, 2016 Share #1005 Posted August 6, 2016 First, no body touches the English labels on the rear buttons. I hated the SL for not having ones. It was a very stupid idea from Leica. Anyhow English is a form of western Germanic language
keithlaban.co.uk Posted August 6, 2016 Share #1006 Posted August 6, 2016 Please don't mess with the dedicated, labelled rear buttons.

I hated the SL for not having ones. It was a very stupid idea from Leica. Anyhow English is a form of western Germanic language Yeah, it's a blend of germanic and latin isn't it? If I remember rightly, that's why there are so few spelling and pronunciation rules in - English as it has two bases, eg foot came from one side and boot came from the other, which is why they have quite different pronunciations for the 'oot', and in the plural forms, we have feet and boots, not foots and boots or feet and beet. And please don't change the buttons!
lct Posted August 6, 2016 Share #1008 Posted August 6, 2016 Ah yes no blind buttons on cameras please and let me program the latters as i wish the same way as i do with normal cameras. I don't understand the (rational?) rationale consisting in asking customers to adapt to the tool and not the other way around.
jaapv Posted August 6, 2016 Share #1009 Posted August 6, 2016 If you have programmable buttons how does one decide which text to engrave? Leaving blank appears to me to be the only option, or provide a sheet of little stickers.
Jeff S Posted August 6, 2016 Share #1010 Posted August 6, 2016 I don't understand the (rational?) rationale consisting in asking customers to adapt to the tool and not the other way around. One only needs to read this forum for a day to recognize that few people agree on anything. More choice...more potential customers....IF the interface is simple and ergonomic. The produce an off the shelf model and if it does what you want you buy it. If it doesn't do what you want you don't buy it. Ala Cart is pure, for the most part, cosmetics. If this is really the new (or was it old?) Leica philosophy i will have to leave them i'm afraid but i will keep my good old M & R lenses anyway so don't count on me to leave you alone my friends

ayewing Posted August 9, 2016 Share #1016 Posted August 9, 2016 Leica have been very successful at keeping the putative new M under wraps so we have all been filling in time with wild speculation and funny stories.
