New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

I would love to see this new EVF only camera as an alternative to a RF successor to my M-240.  Leica has certainly shown that it has developed & integrated EVF technology extremely well in the Q & SL cameras they are offering already.  But I personally would not want to lose the wonderful large, bright, & clear optics that they also have developed better than anyone else in their RF machines.  I've used both the Fuji X-E2 & X-Pro1 for the last four years, & the EVF only camera for me saw much less usage than the hybrid choice of both EVF & OVF in the window finder.  Also any significant movement of subject or camera still induces EVF blurring which I found very annoying.  But for me again a real limitation in the EVF is its' limited dynamic range, causing me to end up with much more shadowing or darker images than I saw when releasing the shutter.  I do find it interesting however that no camera maker has attempted to create it's own hybrid finder, which I suppose says something about the difficulties in doing so.  Leica would the obvious one to attempt to do so.  However, the real issue that I have with an EVF only camera would not being able to see the real world thru the window finder, rather than a TV picture of one.

Plus a real MP like camera: With the MP there was a kind of warranty, that spare parts and components would be delivered 30 years after the issue of the last MP. It would be great, if this new M would be made for the future. It would be nice if Leica could garanty a digital camera which would last for decades, just like the rest of the M's. A digital M which has finally grown up.

Dear LEICA M8 customers,

The desire to own a digital camera manufactured by Leica,

possessing the identical lifelong value retention associated with

every Leica product, was brought to us by many of our customers.

Leica Camera AG has now configured the LEICA M8 to meet this

demand. With today's newsletter, we would like to inform you

exclusively and in advance of an outstanding innovation regarding

your cherished LEICA M8.

With the introduction of a perpetual upgrade program, every LEICA

M8 will forever be a state-of-the-art digital camera. Today's and

tomorrow's users will always be able to incorporate the latest

refinements and developments in handling ease and technology. It is

our aim to secure your investment in the LEICA M8 for the future.

While other digital cameras quickly become outdated and are

replaced by newer models, our new concept extends the value

retention and resistance to obsolescence embodied in the Leica

ethos. Over time, we will gradually offer new product features and

developments as upgrade options, declares Steven K. Lee, CEO of

Leica Camera AG.

Why all that venom for a few gals and guys who would like to use their excellent M lenses for situations where the lovely RF is usable but not optimal or not usable at all?

pop.  It isn't Venom.  I either resent that or am disappointed that my writing style doesn't make it obvious that there is no malice.  Can't you read through it all and take a not so subtile clue from the last sentence:  "Ask Leica to call the camera Sue."  Maybe I need to add some sort of winky smiley face?   ;)  :D  ^_^  Better?

You of all people should recognize snide.  You are one of the cleverest, snidest posters here... and I always like that.

Just for the record and while I agree that the M's, ( film and digital ), optical RF finders are perhaps the best out there there's also cameras like the Voigtlander Bessa 4 A/M's that too have really excellent optical RF's, ( I have one ), and they go as wide as 21mm too.....something that I have for decades of Leica ownership wished would have been available on any of the M series of cameras.

As for no rear LCD --- how awkward to toggle through menu's and try to change parameters while looking through an EVF.

Could it be that Leica will have a configure ap that will set the camera, and store favorite configs?

Pico.

Hey, you had an idea the other day that involved taping an iPhone to the back of a film M.  Maybe, Leica could make an App that would display the M digital camera image to an iPhone and we could just tape that iPhone to the back of the M and view the live camera image on it and the camera settings.  This way we wouldn't need an LCD on the back of the camera    ;)  (This emoji is for you pop!)

I would never use a camera that requires a smartphone.

An EVF M is a good idea provided the RF versions stay in production. At least people will not complain anymore that an M is hard to focus. Plus it would be a great backup/second body for use with longer lens.

But first and foremost I want to see the next M simply upgrade the current M-240 / M-M / M-P with a better hot-shore EVF and much better Live View performance (moveable magnified view and significant reduction in shutter lag).

As Leica has always said that the M2xx hardware cannot support the features you mention (and many of us have asked for years), it is impossible that:

- The current M2xx series will be upgraded.

- The MD with M2xx hardware could have a higher resolution EVF than the "Olympic" crap we are using on the M240.

Basically a Q with M-mount, or ir would be great a Q with some sort of TRI-CRON 28-35-50mm f2 fixed lens. (That sounds like a full frame Digilux 4)

... and that competitors have implemented - I think - roughly 5 years ago. ;)

Right now, I can't think of even one of those competitors right now that implemented a displayless RF camera with the menus only accessible by the means of a phone.

Competitors find it nonsense to remove a $5 display from a camera just to please a few extravagant users.

Apart from this, wireless remote control and Live View have been implemented long ago.

But sure, Leica will be the first to implement this in a displayless RF camera, exactly like I can be the first man on earth to sing "Jingle Bells" while playing a keyboardless piano with an octopus on my head :)

Leica have introduces the SL, a camera which caters for most of the wish lists suggested for upcoming M models in various threads.

Since we can assume Leica don't want a new M to cannibalise the SL, the next M model will probably be in line with what is the heart of the M camera - simplicity and an optical range finder. Improved sensor yes, improved clip on EVF yes, but it will still be a camera designed for rangefinder lenses and no nonsense user interface without bells and whistles.

A good post, thanks adli…..I hope you're right.

I read somewhere recently the the sales of the SL haven't thrilled Leica so far, ( unlike the high demand for the Q ), so if they do produce an M with an EVF of some kind or other that could very well kill off the production viability of the SL.

Whatever the SL sales (conflicting reports, even from main dealers) the new M will be critical to Leica's future success, so I expect it to be very attractive in its own right, and not simply a stripped down version of what a bang-up-to-date manual focus camera could and ought to be. But it won't threaten the SL, which is far too young to be written off just yet, and will attract many people for its own strengths. I expect them both to succeed.

There may be nostalgic/conservative M versions for those who want them, but the main camera will not be a new M262. If it were, it would hurt Leica.
