Question from customer to Leica: I want an M-less M camera.

Answer from Leica to customer: We have already buildt several, called T, Q and SL.

Well perhaps Leica should build a fully comprehensive new camera featuring a rangefinder, pentaprism with reflex mirror, live view and evf (with focus peaking) all built in - in M mount. In a lighter slimmer body than existing dRFs, of course. Adapters to use any lenses (Leica brothers with full compatibility) too using wireless data transmission. We would all be so much better photographers using such a sophisticated and versatile tool.

Good to know ... it will be without me then

I still fail to understand what is wrong with th SL from your POV. Works perfectly with existing M lenses, has an excellent EVF and the system will expand.

Perhaps its just me, there seems to be interest in the new whatever Leica brings out but none of the "mania" that anticipated the next new version only a few years back. I get the feeling there is no great overwhelming need to get the next new thing. It could be cameras have become like PCs, the time for holding existing versions has extended significantly, no longer to necessary to swap with each new version. The leaps are too small to matter?

I think the issue is that in previous iterations, there were still some really obvious areas for improvement, e.g., going full frame with the M9 generation; then getting better ISO plus Live View and quieter operation with the M-240 generation.  The improvements that I can imagine now are really only incremental: even better dynamic range, a truly impressive EVF system; lighter, smaller ... there just doesn't seem to be the pressing need.  I have an M-D and really can't think of anything (except possibly showing only the frame lines for the currently attached lens) that I could really improve.  It is already the ideal full frame rangefinder for me: I, not the camera, am the limit on the photos.

I like your idea. Rangefinder single lens reflex mirrorless M camera. Shall we add autofocus?

Because I cannot imagine Leica going a long way with an optical-only RF

and the SL is very big , there is nearly no difference between a SL and a Canon 5D series

Well, I must say that with an M lens mounted I find the SL size acceptable, and I find it hard to compare the functional shaping of the SL to the Japanese organic (Some call it dropped turd ) DSLR styling.

And as I recall your being in the M system on account of the lenses only, I would find it logical to stay with cameras that have been designed optimally with those lenses, i.e. the M and the SL.

Yeah but how are they going to retrofit little motors in all those M lenses?

Mini V-twin to match the integral rangefinder I'd suggest - solves the power problem too - couple of drops of petrol will keep it running for hours.

My head hurts now.

But not as much as it will if jaapv's suggestion is applied  .

I'd really like to see Leica building a 'concept' camera incorporating ALL the suggestions made here. That would be an interesting machine indeed with all sorts of possibilities (racing style fuel filler cap, nitro boost for super AF, auto-head-shift-system (AHSS - what an idea for marketing), user selectable MF/AF/RF/EVF/Reflex VF system - the list goes on. We have the technology .... but wait I seem to be getting a mite carried away (unlike the concept camera which might be to heavy to be).

Great stuff, perhaps add "wireless charging" from a powerbank, while it is in the favorite "which bag for the M" to the list  ;)

September has arrived in central Europe. Within an hour it will be here too. A few hours later it will be a new month in the Americas.

Still no sign of the new M in September 2016 after 66 pages of complete speculative nonsense.

What has anyone gained or learnt from this?

I'm puzzled.

However , at least we had some fun over languages for a page or two.

Back to sleep now, Rip van Winkle, we'll wake you if something happens. :D
