Just turned 59...

Airline pilot

My real start was as photo editor of my high school yearbook (I had to print all the pictures except senior portraits!)

I’ve shot everything from 35mm to 8x10. I still have a darkroom (alas, unused anymore...), no 8x10 anymore but I still have the 4x5 (alas, also unused anymore.

Digital started with Canon Rebel..about 10 years ago an M9 came aboard since I already had an M6 with a few lenses. As I aged and started wearing glasses I could no longer make peace with the rangefinder. Now I have a Leica CL and a few TL lenses, a Q, and a Q2 on order. Also have some MF digital, currently rethinking that all.

If I buy a Q2 will I become the average/mean age of Q2 respondents here? Imagine, buying into youth through Leica!

(I have posted this before: a university student once announced in class, "Oh my gosh! I just realized you were born in the first half of the previous century!" I woulda slapped him if I were not so tired.) :)

Not only slapped him but beat him to a bloody plup. The younger generation may have a different outlook but your experience beats him every there is. Somehow they need to learn that they don't create the norm they only try to subverse it.

66ish, retired photographer and video producer. I received a Kodak Brownie when I was 10, a Zeiss Continette when I was 16.  Later that same year I bought a Minolta SRT101, followed by some Nikons.  Halfway through college I saved enough money and bought an M4, 35 Summicron and 90 Tele Elmarit...  Fast forward to now... The gear I’ve been using was company owned, but now I’m in the B&H line for my own Q2...😬

77 Years old.  I started shooting pictures while in Abilene High School, and have continued the entire time.  I recently told my wife that if I don't have a camera with me every time I leave the house, I feel naked.  r

i originally shot a 4x5 Super Graphic during high school and for many years.  Finally, I moved to other formats including Nikons, Canons, and Hasselblads.  Finally, I got my first Leica, an M6.  That started my Leica obsession, and now, I own a whole herd of Leica cameras, but the M6 is my only film Leica; all of the rest are digitals.  Although I still have most of my previous cameras, it seems the Leicas are now my prized possessions.

In January, my wife and I went on a Larry's Country Diner Cruise out of Fort Lauderdale.  Since I carried my Leica M10-D on this trip, at one point I requested for a friend to shoot a few shots of me with Larry Black, producer of the Countrys Family Reunion DVD series.  After he shot the pictures and handed my camera back to me, I realized that he had no idea of how to focus a rangefinder camera since the lens was sitting on infinity.  Setting the 35mm lens on an 8 foot focus distance, I gave the camera back to him, and he did fine on the next few exposures.  That experience, and my advanced age, made me convinced that I needed to get a new Leica Q2 as soon as they were released.  (Among my many Leicas, I have owned a Leica Q which I gave to my daughter last year.  Now that I am in possession of a Leica Q2, I am convinced that this is the camera for me, from now on.

Four long years ago, I was diagnosed with an anuerysm in my brain.  Subsequent to the diagnosis, my neurosurgeon attempted to insert a "coil" into the body, only to have it burst, wI hich presented me with a stroke, something I had prayed would never happen to me.  Needless to say, my photography ability has suffered greatly since that fateful day, but I still have to have a camera with me and value it so very much.  Although I have been a member of the Leica Forum for quite a few years, I mostly read posts from so many of you, and value each and every one of your posts so much.  Thank you all for making this medium so much of a joy for me, as well as a most valuable learning experience.

Please understand that this old man greatly appreciates so much being a part of this forum.

41 years old, grew up in Melbourne, Australia and been living in Los Angeles for the past eight years working as an Animator at DreamWorks.

Both my Grandfather and Dad were very keen photographers whose passion was passed onto me. I started with Canon film cameras given to me by my Dad when I was in high school and fell in love with the medium.

Owned a Fuji ga645 in the nineties and shot 6x4.5 medium format film and regret selling that camera to this day.

Purchased my first Leica when I moved to LA, the MP240, which I still shoot today. Just love this camera, the rangefinder and the lenses. I have the 21mm Super Elmar, 35mm Summilux FLE, 50mm Noctilux f/1.0 and 75mm Summicron APO.

My Dad has always wanted a Leica, and was shooting Fuji at the time I bought mine. To say he was jealous was a giant understatement!

As a small thank you for everything he had done for me, I gave him a Leica Q. The day he opened the box he was speechless, and cried. He was so happy.

My Dad very suddenly passed away recently at the age of 66. The Q was never meant to come back to me, but I have it now, and I’ll treasure this camera forever. My dad’s last camera, so it goes everywhere and keeps capturing the memories he would have wanted to have photographed.

Good on you for giving your dad a Q. I can imagine his delight. Being overwhelmed in the moment. Priceless. Now you have it back with the fondest of memories. Never sell that camera. Pass on to your photography enthusiast child someday. 👏👏👏

Lovely stories of giving and caring. Thank you all for that.

I don't have a Q. I have an M-D and a CL, and an R system, and more other cameras than I can easily even remember. It's a particular failing of mine: I accrete things too darn easily. I may sell a lens or two, and maybe the M-D, and buy a Q2. I'm drawn to it for some reason that I don't particularly understand yet. I wasn't so drawn to the Q.

In Summer, I will be 65 years old. I have been making photographs since I was eight or nine.

You have unknowingly just now moved forward one place in the B&H line.....  I was due one from either their March 25th or 28th shipment.  For me I was overcome by GAS.  I decided to hold off a period of time and cancelled my order.   Flush with a nice sum I think a trip is in order and I'll have to take the old Q and hopefully my GAS symptoms will subside.

38, going on 39. Software engineer as my day job. Had a cheap Canon SLR when I was a teenager, but was never that serious. Got a Panasonic GX1 to use for travel photography a decade or so back, but also never used it much outside of traveling. Got my first Leica last year when I bought CL and slowly got into street photography.

I was tempted by the Q for a long time, but didn't feel like buying 3 year old hardware for that kind of money. When the Q2 did not materialise at Photokina last year I compromised and picked up a used Q. Since then I've barely used my CL and gotten a lot more serious about my street photography, a lot of that thanks to the Q being so fun to shoot with. Just sold the Q and got my money back and pre-ordered a Q2 that I will pick up today.

I am 69 and have been doing photography, on and off, since I was given an Instamatic 50 when I was 14. My first SLR was a Praktica L purchased from Wallace Heaton in London in March 1970 for £58/19/0d. Eight years later that was traded in for a Canon AT-1 (£149.90, with the trade-in). I worked through various Canon film models over the years.

My first foray into digital was in April 1997 when I bought a Sony digital camera for £699. I had always been quite heavily involved with computers and digital photography was an eye-opener for me. In July 2001 I bought a Canon D30 (the first proper consumer model digital camera Canon produced) and after that slowly progressed up to my current Canon 1DX Mk II.

I've been an ardent devotee of digital ever since first experiencing it. However, although I'm still fit, I have found that carrying around the Canon (even with a "mere" 24-70mm zoom) is something of a burden when doing city photography or hiking. Further, I did get rather tired of "spotting" sensor dust in post-processing. As a result, in March last year I walked into a London camera store considering purchase of a Leica Q. I had a long discussion and, in fairness, they tried to persuade me that I didn't need to spend so much money and could go for something Fuji-shaped. I persisted, spent rather a lot and walked out with the Leica.

I have been entranced with the camera and as soon as the Q2 was launched traded it in for the Q2—on the basis this will now be my main camera for landscape and city work. I felt the extra resolution and degree of weather resistance made the upgrade worthwhile—together with the fact that, once the new Leica app is released at the start of next month, I can use Bluetooth to keep my phone connected to transfer GPS data to the photos.

It's been a long journey but I'm very happy with the simple sophistication of the Leica and the images it produces. I so much look forward to some landscape work with it over the summer.

I will be 67 this week.  For my 11th birthday I received a Kodak Box Brownie from my neighbor. I still have the first shots taken with that camera. I got serious after graduating college and Bought a Konica TC, then an Olympus OM1 and OM2. Later, I bought Nikon products and still have the Nikon D7000 with all of my legacy lens. I started traveling the world for business and with my wife, so I acquired the wonderful Lumix GX1 and an assortment of lens.  I still use both the Nikon and the Lumix when I can. I received the Q two years ago for my 65th birthday and retirement.  I have used it several times on various trips to Europe and around the US and as such, I usually just take that one camera.  Real story here.  I was in Amsterdam back in October and tripped over a piece of uneven pavement. As I was falling, just knew that my Q would be turned to dust!  I use a hand strap (Gordy's. along with the Leica Protector) and was able to extend my hand upwards with the camera and to my amazement, not one scratch.  That was a scare though and I am thinking about taking the Lumix with me when I travel and using it on a supplemental basis (I use it with several great primes).  My photography is basically travel, landscapes and historical venues and for that reason, I am really pleased with the Q.

Turned 50 a while ago, plus or minus 20% 🙂  If doing a Monte Carlo model on this thread, it probably rules out the minus 20%.

Most of my youth been painting, turned to photography when I got a job and had less free time.

How did I get to the Q: Kodak box camera, Olympus XA, Nikon FE, Nikon f401, Canon EOS 1, Nikon F100, Leica M6 TTL, Leica R9, Leica M7, Nikon D300, Nikon D700, Nikon D800e, Leica  M8, Leica M9, Fuji X100, Fuji X-T, Fuji X-T2, Leica CL, Leica iiiG, Leica Q, Leica SL, Leica X, Leica M, Sony A7RIII, Leica M10, Leica Q-P, Nikon Z7.

Not sure it is complete, some of it I still have, other stuff traded. Currently mainly use Q-P, M10 and Nikon Z7  and SL if I don't have to carry it all day (24-90 and 90-280).  Leica M is main stay, the other stuff is the round out. Don't feel the urge for a Q2. Need to clean out the closet again.
