Advertisement Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Hi digitalfx, Take a look here Leica SL (Typ 601) - Mirrorless System Camera Without Compromise. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peterv Posted November 12, 2015 Share #462  Posted November 12, 2015 Thanks I was going to look it up.  About the R-adapter, not being or having been an R-user myself, I really think Leica should go all the way and make a fully functional smart adapter for R lenses. I think they owe it to their customers.  Besides that, I think doing so would make them look good. In the future, they could say they once had a difficult time during the transition from analog to digital and they were not able to keep the R-line going, but they made up for that, best they could.  This will keep them a respected player that takes care of their legacy and it builds trust and goodwill amongst their customer base. I'm quite sure it can be done technically and it wouldn't matter too much if they make even a small loss on this adapter. It's an investment in their brand name and customer base. biglou Posted November 12, 2015 Share #463 Â Posted November 12, 2015 Well said Peterv. Maybe if the SL does not sell as well as Leica hopes they will make this move. We must not forget that Leica is now a luxury and financial international brand that long ago lost proximity with the professionnals and dedicated amateurs. ramarren Posted November 12, 2015 Share #464  Posted November 12, 2015 peterv,  It's a fine notion. I'd love to see the same functionality and lens compatibility as the R8/R9 with the adapter.  I don't think there's much more to say about it until we see what Leica actually produces in the dedicated R Adapter SL, however. I'll restrain my evaluation until then.
teiki arii Posted November 17, 2015 Share #465 Â Posted November 17, 2015 hello everybody, did some Leica M monochrom users tried to convert color files to B&W on SL? And what do they think about it? Thank you for answering. Â PS: You are perfectly right peterv. But does actually Leica worry about Leica-R users? As ramarren said:"I'll restrain my evaluation until then." wlaidlaw Posted November 17, 2015 Share #466  Posted November 17, 2015 I understand that current orders are at the higher end of expectations, so that at least in the short term, the SL looks like a success. However Leica must get on with expanding the range of lenses and keep the pressure on the coding division to speed up FW updates, if the success is to be longer term. The sort of tardiness we have experienced in FW updates for the M240, must not be repeated.  Wilson

The sort of tardiness we have experienced in FW updates for the M240, must not be repeated.  I believe my local dealer had four or five preorders, which seems a good number for a camera of this type. The lenses will come, I'm sure. Leica's biggest issue to me is their quality and responsiveness on firmware, particularly the actual bugs in the products. Most of the bugs I've found in the X and M-P should have been dealt with before they shipped, in which case there wouldn't need to be a firmware update so quickly and they could spend more time on feature enhancements to manage omissions/customer needs/desires more responsively.  It comes down to software quality assurance, always a difficult thing, and it seems they still have a ways to go in that department.
ramarren Posted November 17, 2015 Share #468  Posted November 17, 2015 hello everybody, did some Leica M monochrom users tried to convert color files to B&W on SL? And what do they think about it?  I do a lot of B&W rendering from the M-P typ 240 as well as all my other cameras. I'd ordered a Monochrom typ 246 originally, but cancelled the order when I grew tired of waiting and wasn't really sure that I wanted a second M.  I've not been disappointed with the B&W that I get from the M-P—the MM246 advantage I was looking for was cleaner capture at higher sensitivities. I suspect the SL will do similarly to the M-P. Yet another area to test ... !  With all the desire to compare and contrast cameras, I sometimes wonder when we should just stop testing and get on with making photos... ;-)
wlaidlaw Posted November 17, 2015 Share #469  Posted November 17, 2015 I always think software does a better job of B&W conversion than using the in camera option. Not least because you can start with the DNG and then you can control the colour contributions to the B&W end product to give the effect of using filters of different hues and intensities. You can also adjust the levels of each colour separately and if you are being really fussy, go into Labspace. I use both Capture One and PS CS 2015 to do this.  Wilson

However, I've also been very pleased with the in-camera B&W JPEG rendering produced by the M-P. Their options for various different filters and contrast/sharpening are, in many cases, as good as and right in line with what I'd produce working from the DNG files, and can represent a time savings for lack of post-processing needed.

Although we grown ups may live thousands of miles apart, there is a groundmass of children who can transmit a cold virus from one end of the planet to the other inside 5 days. I'm just getting over mine.
