I have this situation in connection with my Leica S (006)

The quality is so high, the handling is so easy, the feeling of that big and clear finder is so nice, the pictures are so beautiful, that I am spoiled, and don't like the M240 anymore...

It's an unfair comparison, but I can't use the M240's EVF after some time spent with the Leica S...

I like the S ovf, but I think I would give it up for a mirrorless Leica medium format with smaller/faster lenses.

I wouldn't change the original S viewfinder, but I would like to have a 55 mm f. 3.5 lens for the S. That aperture would mean a smaller and lighter lens.

That 55 mm focal length is the exact diagonal of the 30x45 format, equivalent to a 42 mm with full frame.

There is a cheep and good Distagon T* 3,5/55 mm. It is sharp and light. The Contax 645 adapter is three-four times more expensive than the lens ^_^

Yes, that's true, thank you very much :-) ...

Do you have experience with this lens on the S? If yes, could you please post some pictures with 100% crops?

Thank you very much!

Regards,

Manolo

I would love to have the Leica S viewfinder on ALL SLR cameras - it's the best finder there is!

Unfortunately smaller than the current S lenses at that fast aperture (remember f2.5 is a FAST aperture for medium format cameras) will not happen, as the S lenses are already designed to JUST fit the image circle - just try to put your fingertip on the rim of the lens - it will end up on the photo, while it seems I can almost hold my entire hand in front of a Hasselblad or Contax lens with their larger image circles.

Manolo, the 80/2 Planar on a C645 adapter is already quite a bit more compact and lighter than the 70/2.5 Summarit - it doesn't focus as fast and has an entirely different look.

Thank you, Menos, for your information! :-)

In regard to the viewfinder on the S vs the Leica M viewfinder I am having always problems with the latter because I can´t look as easily till the borders.

I do use glasses... but I must control what is happening on the image's borders, and the glasses don't let me put the eye near enough.

Therefore, framing and composing is much easier for me with the S, regardless of the focal length I am using. With the M, the 28 mm frame is too much, my limit is the 35 mm frame. The 50 mm is ok, of course.

I am speaking about a well known fact, the differences between both viewfinders. The M camera has allegedly a very bright viewfinder, ok, but the viewfinder on the S is as bright, with the above mentioned advantage. I would compare it to the one in the Olympus OM-1, do you remember that nice camera?

I am on vacation till Tuesday. I will send some photos after I'm back.

In my view, it is very useful outside lens. Light and can be used as a body cap.

Thanks!

Hi Manolo,

Above there is a kink to some casual  test shots with the Distagon T* 55mm f3,5 during my vacation.

Thanks for posting Menos, want to post them on the Flickr group I created for the Contax 645 adapter for the S? https://www.flickr.com/groups/leica-s-adapter-contax645/

I sure would like to add them but flickr is so extremely slow and unresponsive these days it would literally take me hours (ever since they changed their website to the newer design it has become absolutely unusable for me).

If you see a shot you would like to add, just invite me and I will click the link in the activity screen which for some reason is about the only flickr page that seems to work.

Using the S VF is like a slice of heaven. For me there is no comparison to anything, EVF or Rangefinder. It's the best hands down and I'm only using manual focus lenses. It's hard to explain but I feel like there is a barrier between myself and the subject with the EVF, like I'm composing through a television (which I guess it is). A TV can be ultra 4k HD Blu Ray buts it's still a TV, therefore a copy of the original. Cometely psychosomatic but real none the less.
