As I sit here looking at the herd, I keep thinking about how nice the black chrome 35mm asph with red numbers would look on my black chrome M-A.  I have the standard issue of that lens, and it really is just cosmetics, but $3250 + taxes for red numbering, o.k. plus matte chrome finish, just makes me cringe.  Plus, on the other hand, it could be my 50th birthday present to myself.  Trying to talk some sense into myself.  Anyone own one yet and so thrilled they have to brag? Advertisement Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Hi enboe, Take a look here World's most expensive red paint. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jamriman Posted August 29, 2015 Share #2 Â Posted August 29, 2015 Its not the red paint that makes it expensive, its a limited edition made out of brass and black chromed. I like the 50. Im trying to sell my 50 ASPH regular to buy it but these days Leica used lenses are no longer in demand, sadly.
rirakuma Posted August 29, 2015 Share #3 Â Posted August 29, 2015 It would look nice paired with your MA and I don't see anything wrong with paying extra for something you find aesthetically pleasing. That being said I wouldn't consider it as an investment.
250swb Posted August 29, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted August 29, 2015 Red is harder to see than white in demanding conditions so it tells you about the people who buy it, esthete's who value bling above practicality. Â Steve
BerndReini Posted August 29, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted August 29, 2015 There is nothing wrong with splurging on something you really enjoy. It is "man-jewelry."

Just a black MP with a bog standard 35 'cron ASPH, I mentioned I had bought it as a birthday present to myself. His face went blank and he asked 'You bought a birthday present for yourself?', so I replied 'Don't worry, I OK'ed it with my wife first'. I thought he might slap me for being so weak, but the several ladies standing next to us looked very bemused. Peter Kilmister Posted August 29, 2015 Share #8 Â Posted August 29, 2015 I bought all my Leica kit with my wife's approval. It makes sense. Get clearance from management and all is happy.
gberger Posted August 29, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted August 29, 2015 My wife was an excellent photographer. She and I "agreed" on our purchases of Leica M bodies and lenses. I learned, very quickly, that a husband's most useful two words in the English dictionary were: "Yes, Dear."
microview Posted August 29, 2015 Share #10 Â Posted August 29, 2015 The red and black is indeed fabulous: the extra weight less desirable, although as it's the smaller Summicron you may not mind that. Go for it!

But then, while she does work, it's all my money for everything in the household and I don't look at her purchases. She's got to have more shoes than God. jankap Posted August 30, 2015 Share #15  Posted August 30, 2015 Nonsense. Leica lenses are made out of metal. This is more expensive. The rangefinder has to follow the lens in a mechanical way. This is an extra effort, that costs. It is said, that Leica are produced following very narrow tolerances. I believe this. Leica has long term facilities for repairing. I don´t know how these are with canikonsony products.  My radio/television shop says, that cheap radiosets of today cannot be repaired after 3 or 4 years (the economical lifetime). Winedemonium Posted August 31, 2015 Share #16  Posted August 31, 2015 They are aesthetically matched. dot-me-not Posted August 31, 2015 Share #17 Â Posted August 31, 2015 Someone mentioned red is harder to see in demanding conditions. I would say red is hard to read in ideal conditions. Â Except for that, I LOVE my 35, so I say get one for your Fiftieth -- it's still a lot cheaper than a convertible/girlfriend-on-the-side.
rsh Posted September 1, 2015 Share #18  Posted September 1, 2015 If it will make  you happy and you can still find both, go for them.  Not certain any are still available at MSRP.  The 50s on E Bay seem to have moved to upwards of $5,000.00 and the 35s upwards of $3,500.00.
