Would you dismantle your M?

I had a good friend who was an auto mechanic. Not a factory trained technician, but rather, one of those mechanics that just seems to know, by instinct, how to get it back on the road.

One day, over a beer, we were discussing wiring harnesses and the complications modern electronics had introduced to his profession:

Me: So how do you cope with finding a short, or any other problem, in these complex harnesses? I mean, sometimes the problem is intermittent.

He: I don't know, I've seen guys have to resort to jumping the fuse and waiting until they smell smoke to find the problem.

Me: Your kidding me! Holy Cow! That seems like a dangerous proposition. Just imagine the other problems it could create.

He: You know, some guys just don't mind it when they find themselves in a real bind. They almost seem to enjoy it.

It was at that point that I realized, I am inadequate. I mean, I can get myself in a bind.....But I never enjoy it.

My camera would go in for service. I'd gladly pay the courageous man/woman their price.

I've done it with older Ms, but it's not really worth the hassle risking to bend the top body or otherwise not getting it feeling 'perfect' again. I pay to get it done now.

I fixed cameras as my full time job for a while (mainly warranty work on Olympus P+S)

I am fairly mechanically minded.

I would not attempt to dismantle my M though - even with a service manual.
