0Raakkeli Posted June 18, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got a message that the sensor has been replaced on my M9-P. I was expecting an upgrade offer but didn't get one. I thought they would always offer an upgrade but I guess they don't. Or could it be a sign that the new M is coming soon? Advertisement Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 Hi 0Raakkeli, Take a look here Leica changed a new sensor to M9-P but didn't get an upgrade offer. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rafikiphoto Posted June 18, 2015 Share #2 Posted June 18, 2015 Interesting. I was in Wetzlar last Friday and I asked them to clean the sensor on my MM. When I went back to collect it they said that they had found corrosion and would I be interested in an upgrade to an M246. I said yes, of course. They kept the MM and said to expect an upgrade offer by email in two working days. That would have been yesterday! Perhaps they have changed their mind and are fitting a new sensor... We will see. Denys Posted June 18, 2015 Share #3 Posted June 18, 2015 The sensor in my M9-P was replaced last month due to corrosion (posted from the UK to Germany) and I wasn't given the option of an upgrade. It's highly unlikely I would have taken that anyway, since the M9-P has all I want in a camera.. ..the policy of an upgrade option does seem to be a bit hit-and-miss though. azuled Posted June 18, 2015 Share #4 Posted June 18, 2015 I ended up asking for the upgrade option on my M-E. Emailed back and forth a few times and it was easily arranged.
Tom Johnston Posted June 18, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 18, 2015 might it have something to do with them having sensors in stock?
Guest )-( Posted June 19, 2015 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2015 Were you hoping for an offer to accept? If you know the sensor might be a problem, probably best to specifically request the option when sending in for repair? But then it might just be something that comes to light in a routine CLA so you never have the option. Just out of interest, does anyone know what they do with the purchased M9/MM/M-E from the exchange? I'm assuming they are cannibalised for parts? geotrupede Posted June 19, 2015 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think if you would like an upgrade, this is always an option. You just need to ask for it. But beware, the upgrade, as far as I know, is not cheap. In fact not convenient at all. It is cheaper to purchase a second hand M and have the previous camera fixed for free. The repair covers for future defects on the sensors for two years and always for corrosion. So I have been told. And in my case I will go for repair when I have acquired a second body. G. gunston Posted June 19, 2015 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2015 2 possibilities: 1- they have hit the target sales of M240, now new target with M246 2- the corrosion sensor issue has been fixed without putting up a press release note for informing existing customers. uhoh7 Posted July 1, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 1, 2015 Anyone who expects a consistent message from Leica service may be disappointed. My prognosis on an M9 shutter repair last winter oscillated wildly depending on who I was talking with. But in the end it was a good repair in about 6 weeks. As the guys above suggest, if you want to upgrade ask. And ask again. If you get no, then ask someone else LOL
0Raakkeli Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted July 16, 2015 Sent an email about the upgrade a month ago. Got an answer that they are looking into it. After 2 weeks no answer so asked again. Got an apology and was told that they will check what is going on. Still no answer. Not really impressed...
tobey bilek Posted July 16, 2015 Share #11 Posted July 16, 2015 It is their option, not yours. If they have a sensor and service staff available, they will repair. I suspect there are no more sensors for now and will not be until the new design is in production. Just a guess.
0Raakkeli Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted July 16, 2015 The sensor has already been replaced. All I was asking was the possible upgrade option from M9-P to M-P. After the two weeks the person I was writing was surprised that I haven't been contacted yet and that she was going to see what is going on. That was two weeks ago. Still no answer from them. Has the customer service always been this bad?
earleygallery Posted July 16, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 16, 2015 They've apparently got stock of 'new' corrosion proof sensors so I expect they will just replace them. I think they offered the upgrade due to not being able to replace sensors at that time.

He will give you a quote for the difference between your camera and a new MP.

I think they offered the upgrade due to not being able to replace sensors at that time. So it takes 4 weeks for them to say no? I can understand that they might not be offering the upgrade option anymore now that they have apparently fixed the issue. The problem for me is the 4 weeks that they haven't contacted me. I think they offered the upgrade due to not being able to replace sensors at that time. That is great news. My MM is in Wetzlar for sensor replacement and I'm told I won't get it back until the end of July so it follows I'll have the new, updated sensor. earleygallery Posted July 16, 2015 Share #18 Posted July 16, 2015 I imagine that the majority of staff at Leica HQ are just sitting in front of their computers answering emails. I wonder how many queries they receive each day? The mind boggles.

I wonder how many queries they receive each day? The mind boggles. So you think that 4 weeks is an acceptable time to get a simple answer to a simple question? That's fine. I personally don't think so.
fiftyonepointsix Posted July 17, 2015 Share #20 Posted July 17, 2015 I'm sure Leica gets a volume discount- the price for one KAF-18500 sensor, that used in the M9, is over $2600. http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?keywords=kaf-18500 Leica replaces more than just the sensor, and of course the procedure is labor intensive. I would think offering the upgrade at the request of the customer would be cost-effective for Leica. Myself, I would want the sensor replaced.
