-Horror story-

I mounted my camera on my Leica Televid 82 Spotting Scope using the connecting adapters and mounted them all on my tripod. Used them for a bout a week and came up with decent pictures of birds. Got lazy one day and left the camera still mounted on the tripod and all it took was a small breeze of air and the result was horrific.

Ouch!  Feel your pain but these things happen.  Don't think Warranty would cover accidents so nothing lost there. Looks a simple repair if nothing else damaged, but if it were mine I would want camera and especially rangefinder checked. Suggest you send to Leica asap and wait for estimate. It will be as good as new after attention. Good luck!

Thanks,

Dealer will send to Germany. Said it would take 3 to 4 months. I also noticed that the battery wont self release any more. I think the damage is within

Now it is sounding expensive. Time to contact insurance?

Wow! It might be more cost effective to buy a used M than what it will cost to fix this one. I am guessing a lot of internal issues. Sorry for your experience.

I doubt it. I cannot imagine it to be close to half the price of a used M.

Shutter appears OK, there cannot be much wrong with the rangefinder - I guess new bodyshell, new bajonet ring, new leatherette some odds and ends, clean/adjust everything.

And he will get an as-new camera back. The downside is that Leica CS seems to be rather flooded these days.

I hope you get it fixed and get it back as good as new.

I have also dropped my camera (not leica though) on a tripod. I was lucky that the lens was not heavy and the ground was soft therefore there was no damage. This is why now I am extremely cautious of leaving the camera on the tripod.

Thanks for that. I really wanted to hear that kind opinion.

Buy a good heavy tripod.   Lightweight ones are nothing but trouble and they do not hold the camera still anyway.

I have a carbon fiber , 3 section legs,  goes to 5.5 feet without center column extending.  There is also a Berlback wood equally tall for 4x5 and long lenses.

No way would I put a camera on a flimsy tripod.

Sympathies for the M experience.

Based on the unfortunate circumstance, this would be my approach going forward...

1. Insurance

2. Better tripod and/or grounding method (center weight, not full extension, etc)

3. Replacement camera  (Good dealers often can provide loaners or other 'friendly' purchase arrangements to loyal customers)

Good choice, but I'd still send your M back to Wetzlar. It will take them a while to assess it, and the repairs will take time.

I agree with Jaap - it will be expensive, but not as bad as you fear, and the camera will be as new. Think of it as a major CLA ...
