Sydney Storm

Weird light in Sydney this afternoon.

I went up to South Head, at the entry to Sydney Harbour.

A thunderstorm was indeed brewing...

Monochrom, 2.8/28 Elmarit ASPH, orange filter (till it got too dark to maintain low ISO for the last three photos)

City being blanketed in heavy rain.

So I thought 'that's nice for photos, rain on it's way'...

Then the shit hit the fan.

I was NOT expecting hail...

Time to go. Hailstones up to 2cm - not life threatening but very painful.

Had to take cover in a small concrete bunker attached to the old gun emplacements.

No more photos, too wet, headache from hailstones.

Camera gear safe and dry in it's little Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home  :)

Thanks JRB and Stuart.

JRB,

the world is upside down lately. Sydney seems to be getting the traditional severe Melbourne weather. First those torrential downpours last week and now this.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-25/readers-photos-of-sydney-hail-storm/6422006

But compared with other parts of the world it really doesn't rate.

The car was fine. Fortunately I took my wife's GLA Merc rather than my Subaru which has thiner sheet metal (so it may not have fared as well), but most of the stones weren't that big.

Regards,

Mark

Yes, weird weather alright. Nice vantage point, I was wondering where. We usually walk around the bridge and Rocks areas, this looked nice, but quite a bit further away (from the main tourist spots anyway).

Nice shots, wonderful weather system.

Great shots Mark! I am slightly amused at the way our (your own, mine and everyone else's) first thought is for the safety and wellbeing of our Leica gear.

As soon as I saw these photos I thought "oh heck, what about his camera!"....I was most relieved to read in #5 that all was well in that regard!!

Of course with storms like this the other thing to keep in mind is the danger from lightning strike, most people, particularly in the city, are not very

aware of this. Anyway I'm glad you made it home to post these!

I too thought that, and then took consolation in the fact his wife's car would suffer the damage, not his, LOL.

Gary

Oh, not at all Gary .

I was in fact VERY worried (more than for the Monochrom  ) that our new car may suffer significant panel damage but was I too far away to get to it without me perhaps suffering significant panel damage, the hailstones hurt enough as it was   ;) .

I've kept the Subaru as the kids are on their Provisional drivers licenses otherwise I'd upgrade.

My comment about my wife's car was that the sheet metal is thicker and stronger than on the Subaru and would cope better with light hail - which was the case as there was no damage at all.

Thanks Dee,

I did keep shooting with the Moohrom but once I realised that I was as wet as if I'd jumped in a swimming pool it was time to put the camera away.

After a wipe down the camera and lens went back into my low humidity cabinet and all is fine.

Regards,

Mark

The Gap, Sydney South Head.

Spectacular views but also one of the top ten most popular suicide spots in the world.

One of my old friends very sadly committed suicide by jumping off the Gap in January this year.

Mark, this brings up something I feel very strongly about. I realise you, as a doctor, will absolutely not agree with me...however I cannot help but think

it totally uncivilised when, in order to achieve their rational choice to end their life someone still has to jump off the Gap. One would think our society

could do better for them than that.

Without going into the various permutations I believe that there is a place for people being able to decide just that.

You italicised rational choice and that is where the dilemma lies.

Mark,

A very inpressive series. I got caught in a hail storm years ago trying to save my MG. The car survived and so did I with some very sore bruises on my head. Like others I was more worried about your Leica gear that your head...!!!
