Leica Upgrade program for M9 ( corrosion of sensor)

My M9P is currently in the queue in New Jersey for the sensor corrosion.  On my initial call, I was offered the MP 240 replacement at $3750.  I decided to have my M9P repaired.  I figure that at $4k, if I wait a year or so, I can keep my M9P with the new sensor AND buy a used, like new M240 and have both.

I talked to Leica NJ late last week.  I have an April 21st service date for the M9P, but they don't have any sensors to install, and apparently the queue of cameras waiting repair is quite long.  I have a wedding to shoot at the end of May, and they said that if the camera isn't finished by then, they'd make arrangements to send me a loaner.   Can't ask for better customer service than that.  It's just a shame that the CCDs have this problem.

Dear friends,  hello!

Let me introduce myself first. I'm Edward, 36, Russia, Moscow.

I have M9-P for 2 years, warranty expired on December 2014.

Week ago or so I have detected the strange dots on my photos and asked the authorized Leica service center in Moscow to check the camera. The verdict was simple-sensor corrosion.

I have spent some time browsing the Internet and found the offer from Leica for upgrade to M 240 line.

Its not black and white if you live in Russia because Russian dealer was not happy to hear about that upgrade and asked for some time to negotiate the terms of promotion with Germany office.

I had phone conversation with Germany customer service and have been advised to "take the camera and carry it by myself to Germany". That's just doesn't work for me as I need to fly to Germany and it's all cost money at the end of the day.  I have asked to find solution and have been promised that they will sort it out with the happy end. I hope so and don't have the reasons not to believe in Leica customer service and responsibility for the information they publicly offered on their web-site about upgrade.

Meanwhile, waiting for their decision I think about following - does it make sense to upgrade it to M240 or stay with my M9-P, change the sensor and wait for new M.

The price for upgrade near the cost of new Summicron 90 which I badly want.

At the same time if the problem with the CCD sensor ouccured once, there is no assurance that I will not face that problem later again and again. As far as I understand the producer of CCD sensor is the same, so I have huge concern that corrosion can apper again on new, replaced sensor let say in two years.

what would be your advice, my friends?

Thank you and happy to meet you all!

Ed

Leica can simply email you a repair form which you can fill in.

Put it in a box together with your M9 and send it to Wetzlar.

After inspection they will give you an option to upgrade.

I had my M8.2 upgraded to an M240 this way. As it's only a few hours drive from my home I decided to pick it up myself.

Welcome! This has been discussed extensively on the forums. Please refer to this and other threads:

Thank you! Now I see my post!

I talked to Leica customer service and they told me that its a First ever request from Russia for an upgarde and they will need some time to find out how to solve the problem. Russian authorized dealer was not ready for upgrade so I would have to contact Germany directly and nobody even mentioned the application form. Waiting for teir decision.

Just ask Wetzlar CS for a time to send the camera in. Leica operates a world-wide service. I'm sure you won't have to bring it in person. Fedex or UPS etc. do operate from Moscow, don't they?

FedEx and DHL yes, they are operating in Russia. But funny part of that story is that person from Leica Customer service from Germany urged me not to send it to Germany by post but bring it by myself "if you ocassionaly will be in Germany for business trip or vacation". That's surprised me a lot. Moreover, I ve been told that it would be the problem to send camera from Germany to Russia given the Russian custom clearance rules etc.

So, Moscow based authorized dealer also has no clue how to deal with that - starting from camera delivery till payment for an upgrade.

I have been primesed by Germany customer service that they gonna solve it with happy end -  I hope so!

And also, I was the person who told sales guys in flagship Moscow Leica store about announcement on aleica web site about sensor problems and upgarde offer:)

lovely russian service ;)

but the withdrawal does not take place through the retailer?

I have some doubts because I do not even say what I have to prepare for shipping: documents - receipts - etc. etc.

I have not used my M9 for 'a year'.  -I use IPhone and a Canon 1DsIII.  I did not know about this corrotion problem before now.  I will check with the Norwegian Leica importer tomorrow to get a deal  on changing to M420.  If I get a reasonable deal, I will upgrade.  My wife and I are going on a world cruise 1.quarter next year.  A M240 would be fine.

- As my M9 was on our 2012 cruise 'from Oslo-Singapore and back', - which I documented here:  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/169946-off-on-a-cruise/

Enjoy!

I thought I'd update my status.  Leica New Jersey signed for my M9 on April 22, 2015.  On April 28th I received a Repair Estimate via mail.  It stated "Approved" as status and listed the following...

Work To Be Performed:

  -Replace image sensor

  ***Leica Good Will Warranty***

   -Check Complete Meter System

   -Adjust R/F

-Check and Adjust For Good Working Order

Repair Parts:

   -M9-P Body Covering

   -M9 CCD/Circuit Board

Estimated $.00

So looks like they are going to give it a thorough once over.

I called Them today to get an estimate and was told they are waiting on sensors from Germany.

  • 2 weeks later...

Is there any news whether the new sensors that Leica is waiting on from ON-Digital will have any cure for the coating corrosion issue or are the sensors just the same as original? I am very reluctant to send my M9 in for its second "spotty" sensor replacement (sensor last replaced in 2012) if the same is just going to happen again in another two to three years. I would rather wait until there is a solution rather than a "band aid" fix. I am far from short of other cameras I can use in the meantime.

So, after more than month of waiting  regarding my request to Leica customer service and emails from them with promises to "we are looking for solutions" and "our russian colleagues will contact you promtly" I have decided to write and send official compliant letter to CEO and Chairman of The Board of Leica Camera AG.

I don't expect any apologizes like

1. It's our first request for upgrade from Russia

2. Russian Custom regulation is strict and we don't know how to send upgraded M240 from Germany to Russia

3. Russian dealer doesn't want to upgrade my M9-P to M240 due the price difference between Germany and Moscow

4. Please bring your camera to Germany physically (I.e. Buy air tickets, spend your money on hotel accommodation, spend your time) for Leica fault with that sensor.

Initially, I thought that this problem is on Russian side, but now I am sure that it's overall problem of Leica. As we say it in Russia,

Fish rots from its head.

Th Germany customer service just ignoring my requests and emails, and promising to find solution...What the problem they are trying to solve???

why they can't easily send NEW M240 to their  Moscow dealer and charge me for that 3300 euro?! What the issue with that?

its a shame, realy.

They are pretending to be Patek Philippe in world of photography, but with such kind of service they look like G-Shock watch.

no excuses for such behavior given the price tags for their product...

will keep you posted on progress.

I can understand that you are annoyed, but what has a pricetag todo with customr service? Would it be OK if their cameras cost half the price? I think not. Anyway, I find this whole affair rather amazing, as Leica is normally quite customer-oriented.

I too am surprised at this.  Leica thrive on their service, if a little slow at times - try Nikon if you want frustration.  I'm sure Russian Customs can be awkward but the Dealer manages to obtain stock.  Something strange here.

Come to think of it, is your camera in Wetzlar? Leica can only make you an offer after they have evaluated the camera - the upgrade price is not a fixed sum - it depends on the condition of the camera sent in. The 3300 Euro you mention is just a ballpark figure distilled from forum posts.
