After a long, dreary winter I finally got Ruprecht, the name my wife bestowed upon my modified '70 Porsche 911 T Coupe, ready for the upcoming driving and Concours season.

 

A few more little things and it's on to the next project

Stuart, there's no Ruf content in this car, although I've met with Alois and discussed the restoration with him, but the price of such an undertaking using his facilities would have made the purchase of a every item from all models in the current Leica catalogue look like a petty cash expense.

 

I've lusted after a 911 ever since they came out in '64, but one thing or another always interferred with me getting one and I put its acquisition on the back burner until I had the time to do the caras well as my ideas for the project justice.

 

When I finally found & purchased this car in February of 2005, it was a perfect, completely stock and utterly original specimen, BUT with a quarter million miles showing, a total & complete overhaul / restoration was absolutely necessary to enjoy it as the high-performance, light-weight, long-distance "gentleman's express" GT I was after. With the exception of body / metalwork, paint, upholstery and some specialized engine and transmission work, I did the majority of the work myself with occasional help from friends and the services of many professional marque specialists in California to arrive at this point. I must admit, it's been a most enjoyable journey.

Please forgive my none-sequitur digression, but since Stuart mentioned Alois Ruf, I thought I'd post this shot, taken at the Los Angeles Porsche Literature Show last weekend of Jerry Seinfeld's latest addition to his already impressive Porsche collection, which was created to his very specific specs by the Ruf organization.

 

It's a low milage, original 71 911S Coupe, completely and meticulously restored with only the best, most original and period correct Porsche giblets and only minimal-but-absolutely-necessary modifications ( wiring, fuel system, RS flares and some invisible interior floorpan mods. ) to accomdate the '98 993 3.6 liter 300+ HP motor with 6-speed G-50 transmission, sumptuous all leather interior with original "Pepito" houndstootrh cloth inserts and every option available from the factory at the time. Upgraded brakes and suspension as well, but the real wonder of it all is the quality of the body / metal / paint-work ( just look at those door shut lines and panel gaps - then check the reflections in the paint…….quite incredible.

 

Ruf really does extra-ordinary work on the Porsches he agrees to undertake. When I asked Jerry how much much all that fun cost him, he really didn't reply directly, but it was obvious even he blinked when he wrote the check.
