Jennifer Posted January 27, 2015 Share #1 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Am I wrong in thinking that the size of the box in which Leica ship their lenses is in direct proportion to the cost rather than the size of the lens it contains? Â Today, I took delivery of a brand new (heavily discounted) APO-Summicron 50mm, and it stuck me that it does come in an awfully large box for such a very small lens. Â Anyway that's it, GAS satisfied ...... no more Leica gear ..... at least not until a new MM appears
Advertisement Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hi Jennifer, Take a look here Very large box, very small lens, very high price!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LeicaPassion Posted January 27, 2015 Share #2 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Welcome to the 50 APO club. Great comment on the formula: large box equals high price. I think the box size is overkill. It wastes closet space. Â Let us know your impression of the lens.
Jennifer Posted January 27, 2015 Author Share #3 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Welcome to the 50 APO club. Great comment on the formula: large box equals high price. I think the box size is overkill. It wastes closet space. Â Let us know your impression of the lens. Â I shall. Â I'm off for a week in the South of France on Friday and my intention is to take just the APO 50 or perhaps also my Lux 50 so that I can do a few A/B comparisons. Â I'm coming to the view that I've become rather 'over lensed' so I'm minded to dispose of the Lux 50. That being said disposing of Leica glass is against my instincts having done it once years ago and come to bitterly regret doing so, so I might just hang on the Lux given it's both a fast and crackling good lens. LeicaPassion Posted January 27, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Since I received the APO last April, my 50 lux has become a paper weight. I will keep it for the rare times that I need 1.4. Enjoy clicking on your holiday!
Bill Livingston Posted January 27, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Well, if any of you seriously consider selling your Summilux 50, please let me know... Â (Although at current exchange rates, I think I would prefer to buy from someone in the Eurozone rather than here!!!)

Economies of scale.
platypus Posted January 27, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted January 27, 2015 Don't worry....once you start seeing the results from the APO50 any thought of boxes will be blown completely out of your mind.

BerndReini Posted January 28, 2015 Share #12  Posted January 28, 2015 (heavily discounted) APO-Summicron 50mm  Would you share with us what "heavily discounted" means, and where this can be had?
Jay B Posted January 28, 2015 Share #13  Posted January 28, 2015 So buy a Leica lens for over £5,000 and they throw in the larger box at no extra cost? Seems reasonable  Or you can say I bought an $8000.00 box with some metal & glass in it...  You'll love the lens; mine hardly comes off the camera. Exodies Posted January 28, 2015 Share #14 Â Posted January 28, 2015 This is the problem with the 50 AA. The cost is not only the 8 thousand but also all the money you had spent on other lenses which are no longer used. Damn fine box though; makes it all worthwhile. CheshireCat Posted January 31, 2015 Share #16 Â Posted January 31, 2015 I am afraid Leica comes second here. The winner is the box for the Canon 50 f/1.0.
Enbee Posted January 31, 2015 Share #17 Â Posted January 31, 2015 Maybe someday I too will buy. Had I not spent on all my lenses, I could have bought one and a half APO!
batmobile Posted January 31, 2015 Share #18 Â Posted January 31, 2015 The large boxes are needed to contain the mythology and misconceptions that come free with each lens . This is why second hand 35mm Summicron V4s are usually mailed in 20ft shipping containers. When the M9 was first released, the 50mm Noct f1 was impossible to ship, because there were no boxes in current manufacture that were large enough. Thankfully, things have calmed down a bit since then and people are no longer having to rebuild their homes to suitably accommodate them. Â I do remember my 24 lux box being a bit large come to think of it. Same goes for the Monochrom!
Jennifer Posted January 31, 2015 Author Share #19 Â Posted January 31, 2015 Just perusing the first batch of photos form my APO-Summicron 50......... WOW, what a phenomenal performing lens. Except in poor light, I can't see why I'd ever choose the Lux over it.

Except in poor light, I can't see why I'd ever choose the Lux over it. Â Can you give us an idea of what you like about the APO? I guess, when using a camera handheld, that a massive difference in resolution might be harder to detect against other 50mm lenses ..... but is there a difference in "look" (smoothness, micro contrast, 3D look etc?) that you appreciate with the APO?
