[...] Wide, the 75 is very soft [...].

Do you mean the 75/2 apo? I have both lenses and would not swear that the 50/2 apo is significantly sharper at f/2, in the centre of the frame i mean. Borders and corners are another story. I have not used those lenses on larger than 24MP sensors though.

I've taken care to think about this and used some experience in forming my view.

The 35 Cron takes some beating, however my decision is that, if I could only take one lens, then it would be the 50 APO Cron. An amazing lens and no purple fringing on mine.

Now please play the 'Desert Island Discs' music and ask me which 8 records I'd take. (Pink Floyd for sure. Dire Straits, as well as Dusty Springfield, and Elgar.)

(If you don't know about Desert Island Discs then poor you ... you have missed a lifetime of wonderful BBC radio broadcasts. All available on BBC iplayer.)

Now that I am down to one M, the Monochrome 246, my lens preferences have changed quite a bit since switching from a 240.  If had just one lens to keep, would be the older 50 Summicron.  I think mine is V4.  It is classic.  My second choice is similar vintage 35 Summicron.  I own newer Aspherical lenses.  But, when I put the older lenses on the 246, it just sings.

I basically only use a lens of one focal length -- the 28,  even this is what I do in life.  My favourite  on the M9 is the V4Elmarit,  and on the Monochrom,  I occasionally use a 28 Summicron,  even though I have a back up Elmarit,  and on the Q,  I am happy with that 1.7 Summicron.  For subtle colour rendition,  I would take the Elmarit over everything else.
