About ten years ago, I shot my last wedding. Had a break for several years, and just before Covid, I started to be more serious about photography again (though, 100% amateur). Covid came together with social distancing, and the fact that I live outside the town, in a tiny village on a mountain with little inhabitants, my focus shifted to nature and long exposure.

And within this two years of Covid, I lost my interest in people. At the moment, I simply don't care. Which is bad, at least I feel so, but somehow, isolation changed my perspective.

Yet, I see so many great photographers, photographing people: the Turners, f.e., or @trickness, or who ever, and I love their work, how they portrait people, how they show us a world with good people. What makes me envy them, is the ability how they get to take the photo. The interaction with the subject. The fact that the subjects, agrees and allows to get the image taken.

During the last two years, I became a total introvert. Not being able to show interest in people, not being able to ask strangers for a portrait. Mind you, it was so easy to me before. I need to get over this...

This month, I was in another village, somewhere at the coast of Croatia. I decided I need to ask for some portraits, so I did, I asked, and I got approval. The images are not great, yet, for me a big step forward as I finally too the step to take some portraits again.

and the second image, I only had courage for two portraits. Silly me.

Both images on m8 with elmarit28mm, except some cropping, profile adjustments and some burning/dodging in C1, no editing.

Hey Olaf - many thanks for the kind words about my pictures. I think you’re doing great! So long as a photographer knows their camera and has good technique really for me the missing ingredient is just establishing rapport very quickly with the subject. There are some Leica videos on YouTube with Mark Mann who is a fantastic portrait photographer and he emphasizes this aspect of his end result as being probably the most critical thing. You should check out the videos, I found them very helpful! My best regards to you

Carnaval took place last weekend in San Francisco. Between the performers and the decked-out spectators, it's a great event for photographers. Here's one of the performers posing for me in front of a mural before the parade. I'll post a couple more portraits later. M10-R, 50mm Summilux.
