The Sitter

This Javanese  man spends most of the day sitting on a bench next to his wife’s kiosk in the market.

I was captivated by his features lit by the morning sunlight. After having asked me the customary questions: « How old are you? Where do you come from? How long in Indonesia? ».

I asked him his age.« Born in 1950» he answered.

Then I lifted the camera to my eye, nodded at him and started taking photos.

The photo session lasted at least ten minutes.

He sat quietly for me. It was a very relaxing 10 minutes.

Excellent portrait, but your accompanying text raises a question for me. I read that there are over 800 languages spoken in Indonesia. So, what language did you talk to him in? Indonesian? French? English?

Good question eawriter. Here in Java, most people, especially the elders speak Javanese.Javanese has 3 levels of language ( from high Javanese to more street Javanese). I don't understand or speak Javanese. This man spoke to me in Indonesian. So I answered back in my broken Indonesian language. In schools the children are taught Indonesian as well as their mother tongue depending on which Island you live on. (Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra.....). Indonesia is a very diverse and interesting country. People are open to being photographed. Must say that I am loosing my French Canadian (my mother tongue) because I communicate with my wife in English and Indonesian. Merci et bonne journée. Regards. Carl.

Is that traffic in the street below? The wide aperture almost eliminates context. A lovely natural expression.
