Suddenly, I find my self considering going from the M9, to the M...

I made the move from ME to M240 last month, happy that I did on the whole.

The good

The M240 feels like a much more finished and modern camera

Live view is great

It has a better shutter sound, does sound like a clockwork device

Screen is much better

The Bad

It feels fatter and heavier

While photo quality is technically improved, in some way it has lost character and photos look a little more generic than those from M9

I am happy with the upgrade

Thanks, I'm about to upgrade from an M-E to the M240 as well, motivated by far better ISO performance, Live View, and the CCD sensor issue.

Of all the various iterations of the M9, I have a bit of a soft spot for the M-E (with it's potentially corrosive sensor). Something about the unpretentious simplicity of the camera. I also rather like the eccentric styling of the body and the lack of the frameline preview switch which IMO make it quite a handsome camera body. I sold a mint one a few months ago and slightly regret doing so.

OP.

I Never used the M9. M240 IQ is 'just' doable for me. I prefer Fuji's X sensor for IQ.

Fuji X

I wish Fuji made Leica sensor. But I like Leica controls and the Fuji controls are so-so. I use Fuji's if my cam will be wrecked. Fuji's are disposable.

I'm not a camera fondler...I'm a doc photog, I'm not a fan boy of any one cam. It is a tool, that is it. I have to push my files a lot since I am not a staged / set up / studio photog. I prefer not having to fight my tools.

M240

Leica should have done better with its sensor on the M240 for the price it charges.

This is about as good as it gets for the M240 with my work.

M240

They talk of pixel density. The Leica M240 strikes me as 'low density' compared to the Fuji...but I'm not expert. Just some files work better than others. Leica's files will fall apart when you push em.

M240

I had 5 Leicas', sold 1 now have 4. I wont be upgrading the M240 any time soon. As I said, M240 is doable. If Fuji or some other company comes out with a 28mp rangefinder Leica knockoff for $3000 then will may move.

I certainly have no issue at all with the technical quality of the images captured by my M-E, it's quite a fine camera for most photographic situations. Operationally, I absolutely love using it, I think it has improved my photography. The M-E's low/evening light performance does leave something to be desired though, hence my plan to upgrade to the M240.

So, my input:

Had two M9 cameras. Loved them, but profoundly disliked the loud shutter and the limited ISO range (800 max usable).

Got the M240 as well as the MM later on, out of curiosity.

Loved everything about the M: the improved framelines, the very much improved rangefinder (it's a treat), the superb shutter sound, the higher ISO range, the longer battery life, as well as ...the very fine B&W conversions !

In contrast, the MM seemed a specialized tool, which, in the end, I decided was a luxury I could not really justify (in spite of the fact that I convert to B&W everything except the family photos), so out it went. Never missed it.

Now I use the M240 and the trusty MP as my B&W camera of choice, and could not be happier. I've not had a single problem with the M240 after close to 20 months of use.

The current M9/Monochrom sensor issues just reinforce my feeling that the M240 is a very much improved tool.

Just my opinion, of course

Wayne, I moved from the M8 to the M 240. I was thinking the same you consider in your post. I love very much the M8 sensor and I'm amazed by the possibilities of the M 240. Thei are quite different cameras. This is why, given that the price of the M8 was very low when I moved to the M, I've decided to keep them both. And I did the right thing: I had to send my M to adjust the RF and had to stay a month without it. Luckily I had my M8 :D

Not me. If Leica ever put an Xtrans sensor in an M I would dump the system entirely. A Sony A7R sensor with a thin cover glass would be nice but no Fuji for me. I've got an XE1 in a cupboard and the lenses are lovely. But I never use it because the folliage still turns to mush on occasion.

I much prefer the M sensor over the current Fuji.

I am with you on that Gorden, having both the M240 and the Fuji X-T1 the M240 has a better sensor.

But IMHO Fuji's Provia slide film is superior to the M240.

Love your pictures

A bit photoshopped for me (I am assuming!) but you really have an eye for the moment.

It's encouraging that you like the 240 at all since you consider yourself just an equipment user, presumably ignoring the fondle factor of the 240 ;)

I am curious to know what you mean by "push more". I have to say that I have had the opposite experience with the Fuji X files. I do agree whilst there is more in the highlights from Fuji but there is less in the shadows and I tend to expose for shadows.

The other thing I dislike about the fuji is the mashing of fine detail which led me to abandon the system.

I will admit the colours are tremendous and probably one of my favourites out of the camera.

In terms of pixel density, 16mp for aps-c is slightly denser then 24mp for FF however this is a misleading metric as 24 > 16 and therefore by default you get much more detail if the pixel level is sharp which it always is way more on the 240 (and M9) then the Fuji X. In fact my Olympus E-M1 was way sharper then the Fuji X, again a common complaint on the Fuji forums.

Lastly a FF sensor will always need a smaller shutter to be equally as sharp for 3D scenes as the DOF is always thinner. So in low light it tends to be easier to get sharper from the same aperture from a smaller sensor. The quid pro quo is the much higher DOF flexibility on FF.

It's hourses for courses. Whilst I would say my A7S has more DR then the 240, I would also say the 240 has bags more then the Fuji X, and certainly bags more detail,

Horses for courses, glad to see you enjoying and using both cameras.

I perfectly agree with Jaap. None of the pics posted by Dent in that long post is giving me any hint about which sensor or camera is better. I'm not judging the subjects, but IMO there is too much PP on those pictures. You could virtually have that kind of results with any camera on the market if you have to work this much on it after you took a picture.
