DigitalHeMan Posted December 24, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted December 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently acquired a Macro Elmar for a very good price. The lens works well and I am enjoying using it, however I have a question regarding the collapsible lens barrel. Â When it extends it locks in place, no problem, however when the lens is collapsed the barrel spins freely and extends/collapses as the lens is turned upside down. Is this normal behavior? If so, has anyone come up with a way of stopping the unwanted extension, short of using an elastic band? I'm concerned that at some point the lens will extend and get caught on something..... DigitalHeMan Posted December 24, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted December 24, 2014 Thanks. I guess I'll just learn to live with it Doc, I'm aware of the lock when it is extended, it is the lack of lock in the collapsed position that I am referring to. Happy Christmas all

Mijo Posted December 24, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted December 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I actually also bought this lens this week, for a really good deal, as well and also noticed that it doesn't lock in the collasped position. It's definately not a deal breaker, IMO,

lct Posted December 25, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted December 25, 2014 when the lens is collapsed the barrel spins freely and extends/collapses as the lens is turned upside down. Is this normal behavior? DigitalHeMan Posted December 25, 2014 Author Share #10 Â Posted December 25, 2014 No it is not. Not difficult to fix though i suspect. Â Â So are you saying that if the lens is on the camera in the collapsed position, and you hold the camera with the lens facing down, it doesn't extend? DigitalHeMan Posted December 25, 2014 Author Share #12 Â Posted December 25, 2014 Just have Will give a once-over;) Â Â I can certainly do that, but other than the sliding barrel, which most seem to say is normal, the lens works fine.....
lct Posted December 25, 2014 Share #13 Â Posted December 25, 2014 So are you saying that if the lens is on the camera in the collapsed position, and you hold the camera with the lens facing down, it doesn't extend? Exactly.
otto.f Posted December 25, 2014 Share #14 Â Posted December 25, 2014 I have never seen a Leica lens that locked in the collapsed position. Â My Elmar 50 does which is standard in my experience; locked is not the word, but it stays sticked. I have owned the ME 90 and it did not fall out when bending forward
MarkP Posted December 25, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted December 25, 2014 When in the collapsed position the lens barrel does not lock as when extended but it should not extend on it's own when the camera and lens are pointed down. It is too loose and could be fixed if it is bothering you.

Doc Henry Posted December 25, 2014 Share #17 Â Posted December 25, 2014 One of the best Leica lens with film or digital camera ! can be used as tele for portrait and macrophoto * post 2377 : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/other/286747-i-like-film-open-thread-119.html Merry Christmas Best Henry "Macro with an adapter, it allows the development up to 50 cms and reaches a magnification ratio of 1: 3. Jeff S Posted December 25, 2014 Share #18  Posted December 25, 2014 Don't know if this pertains to your issue, but the new Macro Elmar has been improved in 3 ways, per the marketing material…  The new version of the lens differs from the old version in three ways. Firstly, the aperture ring is larger, and easier to hold. Secondly, the lens clicks firmly into place both when extended and when retracted, finally, with the new version, the aperture ring stays in the correct place when the lens is fully retracted. This allows the lens to be focused from minimum focus distance to infinity without removing the adapter. As I understand it, the macro adapter offers the same effective length of extension as extending the lens does, and can also be 'zoomed' to different levels of extension.
