Macro-Elmar collapsing question

I recently acquired a Macro Elmar for a very good price. The lens works well and I am enjoying using it, however I have a question regarding the collapsible lens barrel.

When it extends it locks in place, no problem, however when the lens is collapsed the barrel spins freely and extends/collapses as the lens is turned upside down. Is this normal behavior? If so, has anyone come up with a way of stopping the unwanted extension, short of using an elastic band? I'm concerned that at some point the lens will extend and get caught on something.....

I have never seen a Leica lens that locked in the collapsed position.

My Elmar 50 does which is standard in my experience; locked is not the word, but it stays sticked. I have owned the ME 90 and it did not fall out when bending forward

"Macro with an adapter, it allows the development up to 50 cms and reaches a magnification ratio of 1: 3. The danger is that this new 90mm is considered as a macro lens. In fact, it is a compact, high-performance lens that can be used for reportage photography when his high class high definition can add new meaning to the photo

At maximum aperture, it has a high contrast and high definition images with a micro remarkable contrast with very clear contours of subjects.

This performance exceeds the recording capabilities of the new M Monochrome and most silver emulsions. This brings new opportunities within the reach of the photographer M. This is a beautiful versatile lens that will provide stunning images with current catch the film and digital media.

With smaller apertures performance is not reduced and this feature makes this an excellent choice Macro Elmar for studio portraits". Erwin Puts Leica chronicle

and all this with only 4 lens elements and weight 240g

Don't know if this pertains to your issue, but the new Macro Elmar has been improved in 3 ways, per the marketing material…

The new version of the lens differs from the old version in three ways. Firstly, the aperture ring is larger, and easier to hold. Secondly, the lens clicks firmly into place both when extended and when retracted, finally, with the new version, the aperture ring stays in the correct place when the lens is fully retracted.

According to this picture, it is necessary that the tube must be fully extended to be operational.

I do not think that there are changes with the new ME 90 , except the aperture ring mentioned by Jeff,

Henry,

The 'new' ME (which I don't have) is designed to be used in a retracted state when used together with the 'new' macro adapter. This allows the lens to be focused from minimum focus distance to infinity without removing the adapter. As I understand it, the macro adapter offers the same effective length of extension as extending the lens does, and can also be 'zoomed' to different levels of extension.
