UK's largest hoverfly Volucella zonaria (commonly called the Hornet Mimic).  Up to 19mm long, compared with the <5mm of the ones I posted earlier!

I love your garden-- my wife would hate it- she is deathly afraid of bugs/bees/hornets and spiders

That is indeed a shame - most insects (in the UK at least) don't deliberately seek to bite or sting us (female mosquitos and horse flies excepted).  Childhood trauma?
