erudolph Posted October 12, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) My file numbering was set in the Menu to L300xxxx The problem: during a trip, the file numbering on my M turned over from L3009999 to L3010000. Unfortunately, file numbering is part of the User Profile, so when I changed profiles, the numbering was reset back to L3000000. I wish that hadn't happened. Advertisement Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Hi erudolph, Take a look here File Numbering & User Profiles. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted October 12, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 12, 2014 You may wish to rename your "Image Numbering" as "L301" and save it in all your profiles.
Overgaard Posted October 12, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2014 You can change the numbering to include the letter. I have one camera set to M240 and another to J240. You can do the same with user profiles I guess. Having different letters for each profile so as to separate them (and also have that piece of extra info when editing: Which was made with which profile). erudolph Posted October 12, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted October 12, 2014 Thanks for replies, Torsten and LCT. LCT, I had already done as you suggest and will keep my eyes peeled when the image count approaches 302xxxx. Thorsten, what I do is similar to you, I simply use a different leading digit for each camera body. So far that has worked since I've only had three Leica digital bodies. FWIW, during Lightroom import I change the file names to Date+Original File Name, which averts the disaster of overwriting older files.
algrove Posted October 13, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 13, 2014 I stopped doing what you do so I could find files by original name. My backup drives always have the original file name from the camera. There must be a way in LR to tell it not to overwrite old files but just keep both and give the second one a "-2" or whatever you tell it to do. No? erudolph Posted October 13, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted October 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lou and JD, thanks for the thoughts on duplicate files. Good info. For my own use, I actually like having the date as a piece of info in the file name.
CheshireCat Posted October 14, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 14, 2014 The problem is due to the idiotic firmware storing all parameters (including timezone) in profiles. In any case, my experience is different as the file name numbering does not automatically increment the first 4 characters of the filename. For my own use, I actually like having the date as a piece of info in the file name. I understand, however each file has a date and time stamp anyway and sorting by that is always possible.
