k-hawinkler Posted September 21, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 21, 2014 (edited) How to check M8 Shutter counter?thx Have a look here. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/35415-determining-shutter-actuations-m8.html Basically find image unique id in Exif data, then convert from hexadecimal to decimal. For example if image unique id is: 0000000000000000000000000000252C Convert like "0x252C in decimal" in the web browser search and you get 9516. 0x0000000000000000000000000000252C in decimal Edited September 21, 2014 by k-hawinkler

russell c. greenberg Posted September 21, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 21, 2014 There is an easier way to determine the shutter count on your M8, which I learned on a previous post here. 1) press the right button 4 times. 2) press the left button 3 times. 3) press the right button once more. 4) press info, you will then see a menu in small print. 5) scroll down (hitting bottom button) until you see Body Debug Data. 6) press set and scroll down until you see number of exposures (and the number taken). It's that easy, too bad that this does not work on an M9. 3
mike_j Posted September 28, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2014 And if the shutter count is approaching 15000 you probably will need a new shutter

mike_j Posted September 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 28, 2014 (edited) Hi Henry, Leica fixed it free of charge as a goodwill gesture. I think that this is their standard practice. Still cost me €200 in shipping and repair to minor problems they found but I got a new shutter, wind mechanism and full CLA. I confess it plays second fiddle to my Sony A7 nowadays but I still use it for B&W and infrared. Edited September 28, 2014 by mike_j

DSLRs are fine when one needs a long zoom and some video, as at the rowing events I go to, but I do like rangefinders for the rest. My IIIg gets used quite often too! mike_j Posted September 29, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 29, 2014 The most used lens on my Sony A7 is the 50mm Summicron M which I found a little too long on the M8, I dithered about buying an M9 variant but love the Sony adaptability and general flexibility. Still have my Leica lll though it doesn't get out much.

I've used up to 135mm on the M8 (guessing the framing a bit ) but the lens I use most is a Voigtlander 21mm.
HBFC3 Posted May 11, 2018 Share #13 Posted May 11, 2018 I am brand new to the world of Leica Digital cameras. I am old school and for the past 40 years have been used to my M3, M4-2 (yes, I went to the dark Canadian side), and my M6. I am very familiar with Leica film cameras, but do not know diddly about the M8. I have seen Ebay ads where people claim to have little or NO shutter actuations on their M8s showing pictures of the "Debug Screen". Some of these cameras look completely worn, so it doesn't seem logical that they will have as little as 2,000 shutter actuations. Is the "NUM EXPOSURES" figure shown from the Debug Screen in decimal or hexadecimal format?? Thanks in Advance
jaapv Posted May 11, 2018 Share #14 Posted May 11, 2018 Take an image, read the unique ID # from EXIF and run through a hex converter.

jaapv Posted May 11, 2018 Share #16 Posted May 11, 2018 And if the shutter count is approaching 15000 you probably will need a new shutter The highest recorded M8 shutter count in this forum is 310.000. It should last well over 100.000 on average. There have been a few early failures. but we may asume that those cameras will have received a new shutter by now. The Leica shutters are made by Seiko-Copal, like Nikon and many other brands. Mine died just under 15,000. For a broader view see here leica m8 | Camera Shutter Life Database Rather wobbly statistically. How many cameras out of the total of 70.000 made? What about the bias of respondents? Someone with a failed shutter will respond, someone with a shutter that keeps working will not. Fake science, I fear. Yes, I know that it is a four year old post. The lack of shutter problems since then reinforces the objection.
chris_livsey Posted May 12, 2018 Share #17 Posted May 12, 2018 There is an easier way to determine the shutter count on your M8, which I learned on a previous post here. It's that easy, too bad that this does not work on an M9. This sequence does work though Delete -> up (2x) -> down (4x) -> left (3x) -> right (3x) -> Info
