tomasis7 Posted September 22, 2014 Share #81 Posted September 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) As long as you have the $, buy what you like. This type of camera only appeals to collectors. No serious shooter in their right mind would pay that premium for a camera that makes picture taking harder than it has to be. Why does the box and gloves turn you off? Eggelston handles his Leica's with white gloves...don't you want to be like him? If I was a collector I'd be using gloves on it. Disagree 100%. The wrong thing is that Leica releases that as collectioner item which is big thumb down. Release it as a normal camera, and I prefer it to M-P. Serious shooters been doing on film cameras, what's your point? maybe you grew up in Nintendo generation? Going from M3 to M60 is not much difference except medium. Advertisement Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Hi tomasis7, Take a look here M(240) Edition 60. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 22, 2014 Share #82 Posted September 22, 2014 I disagree here. Leica does not release as a collector's item. It releases a product at a certain level of features and luxury - it is the buyer who decides what to do with it - be it vacuum-wrap it in plastic and put it in a safe, or beat it up using it hard. Nothing wrong with either. The rest is personal opinion and taste - hardly worth getting upset about. If some Cousteau - type would buy a Rolex Submariner it would be a sensible buy - if I did so it would be an affectation.
tomasis7 Posted September 22, 2014 Share #83 Posted September 22, 2014 Maybe it is so but it came with bundle (body and lens) then also it is made under limited production to raise collectible value. Nothing with it as Leica has been doing earlier. Market the m60 in same way as M Monochrome and I wont criticize in same way. I think that Leica is too afraid to make this way and it is too early now, maybe the m60 is a way to test market's reaction. I quite like the futuristic look of M body, maybe we'll see M-P version with detachable screen when technology makes it thin enough to make a modular system with selectable accessories. C'mon, m60 is not much different to M-P and it costs double of the M-P.
bocaburger Posted September 22, 2014 Share #84 Posted September 22, 2014 As I mentioned earlier, you pay More for Less camera like Porsche does for customers (GT3-RS). Totally not even a close analogy. Porsche GT's are stripped of luxury and convenience features like air conditioning and stereos and carpeted door cards only to save performance-robbing weight, not to appease customers who revile modern technology. Otherwise the GTs are loaded with functional upgrades in engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension which increase the performance well above the mass market models. Not remotely what Leica does. This is a limited edition to mark an anniversary - it may well be that they do not see a sufficient market to release it as a general product. Which means R&D has to be amortized over a small number - which means they have to present it in a way that suits the high price. I think the margin is not even that high. If it had a collector's premium I would expect it to cost double.

Leica M60 is stripped of luxury and convenience as well For me, without lcd and buttons, it enhances performance of photographing, believe or not. Thank god, I'm not interested of any junk crap flooded in Photokina every year.
tomasis7 Posted September 22, 2014 Share #87 Posted September 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) If it had a collector's premium I would expect it to cost double. now we agree. I wish Leica could do more like Defakto watch company, I select parts and they make a camera for me. Actually it doesnt cost much make a M60 with monochrome sensor as A la carte selection as it is basically hand made item like watches but we know Leica charge premium price and their strong point of technology is lenses. Leica dont sell many items and I dont see how they win on R&D budget that much. I don't believe on distribution to small boutiques, rather sell online. Maybe in future their strategy is to make customized camera for every customer. The challenge is to become a small mobile company from a traditional one with conservative values. Most Leica customers are weirdos and exhibitionists like me. Ordinary people go for Canikon and OliPano.
timde Posted September 22, 2014 Share #88 Posted September 22, 2014 Anything that gets numbered 1 to 600, with matching number on the lens is a collectors edition regardless of what people do with it. Leica may not make much margin, perhaps very little, but there is a reason it was the hit of the show ...

jaapv Posted September 22, 2014 Share #90 Posted September 22, 2014 I could imagine that a set of M, M60 and XVario would cover a wide range of photographic wishes - in style:D To be fair, if I were in an income bracket that would not notice a paltry 15.000 Euro or so (which definitely not), I would probably even buy one - and use it. mooey Posted September 22, 2014 Share #91 Posted September 22, 2014 I haven't posted here in a while as I gave up on Leica a while back, but the M60 is the most exciting thing Leica has done since they started making digital Ms. Too expensive for sure, but let's hope this is the precursor to a more reasonably priced standard production model. I would like Auto-ISO to be included (how you would set the minimum shutter-speed would be an interesting challenge for a camera without menus, but possible; alternatively I'd be happy with a default of 1/125s or 1/250s; or perhaps there could be two or three Auto-ISO settings each with a different minimum shutter-speed?). I'm dreaming now ... One question: how do you set the clock for the EXIF time info? Or is there simply no clock? Which would be a neat solution. Presumably battery life on this thing is pretty good with no JPEG processing or screen to power?

quadraticadder Posted September 23, 2014 Share #97 Posted September 23, 2014 I'd buy it in a heartbeat as a second body without the Audi styling, as a monochrome, with a 240 sensor (sans bayer filter), for around the price of the M240. Berth Posted September 23, 2014 Share #99 Posted September 23, 2014 I thought I'd start a new thread (Mods feel free to combine it with the other, but if you do, can you rename that thread?). Call me daft, but this M60 version appeals to me more than the standard M(240) or the M-P version. I appreciate that it is a premium limited edition model, and I wish it didn't come with that over the top box and white cotton gloves (a turn-off if ever there was one), but I like the concept. I do wonder if Leica will pass down these enhancements at any stage - from past experience, some might, some won't. Has anyone found any detailed specs or anything like that? Buffer? Processor? What's on the B&H website seems a bit thin. I prefer it as well, but I wouldn't pay $.05 more than the price for the standard model. Silly fanboy marketing exercise than has no relevance to me. mas Posted September 23, 2014 Share #100 Posted September 23, 2014 IMHO, this is the digital camera Leica should have come out with first, for half the price of the M8. Digital capture, no fancy features.
