Surely not black chrome! Why not a BP, Leica?

I love the black chrome look. I wish the MP came in black chrome without needing to order via a la carte. Or, the M-A should come with a meter ;) ... either way that combination would be my ideal M.

I think the silver ISO dial on the back of the black M-A disturbs the otherwise all-black aesthetic.

Leica appears to have remembered to chop into the 1/4 sec. engraving too. Those cats rarely miss a trick.

...yup, semi-ambivalent, sounds like an exposure meter-related announcement might not be too far off.

For me, this is a great product and perhaps it is time to consider getting another meterless camera to add to my black M4 (I find meterless photography slightly more rewarding, precisely because of its challenges). Which brings me to my next point - why was the shutter release timer omitted from the M-A's features? The mechanism would normally be situated in the battery area. It is not a show-stopper for me, but it is quite a useful option to have every now and then. Other than that, I have nothing but positives for this development.

Great camera - well done, Leica. Film is not dead.

Maybe, but I was thinking of it as Wetzler dotting the "i" on the nostalgia angle. :) What Leica would charge for a new clip-on meter I could buy a couple Sekonic 308s.

And remember, "film" also includes positive film which many people use (including myself.) In this case, your description of exposing "film" is incorrect for transparency film and only applies to negative film. :)

"Film" means B&W Negatives, preferably TX or HP5.

The rest really isnt important!:o

I will. Not soon, got two sons studying right now, but asap. I love my M3, but I always wished I could buy one new, a purely mechanical camera, no electronics, no battery, just a camera I would use for years to come and then pass on to some other analog nerd.

When I discovered the M-A yesterday on photokina opening day, I was thunderstruck. Had not read anything about it, just walked onto the Leica stand, and there it was: my good old M3, reborn.

I got my M3 from an old friend, who has used her his entire life. I will continue to work with this camera, and I will pass it on to someone else for sure one day.

That's what Leicas are made for: taking pictures, and doing so for years to come. I am happy that Leica did it again, in such a small niche, And I will get my copy in black (to distinguish it from my M3 on first sight) one day.

I'd love to have the chrome version if I would have that money in my pocket. So I can't buy it, but I do have most analog Leica M camera's, so I have nothing to complain. I use them all and it's great 'to have this much choice of older camera's. But the feeling of a newly made M film camera would be nice. And I agree with those who would have preferred the M4 rewind knob on the new M-A.

Maybe this topic is already discussed here, but i didnt found it so im starting a new Thread.

Im a huge Fan of the Film-Shooting-Style.

That means i like advance levers, i dont like LCD-Screens, i like simplicity.

So my tought is Why did Leica never made an actualy Digital-Analoge merge camera.

My idea would be to have the old sweet cloth shutter and two dials (Iso,Shutterspeed), but instead of film there is a Digital Sensor.

Every time you pull the lever a dynamo turns on to fire the Sensor for a few seconds. so you dont need a Battery at all.

So the time they could actually spent on the main components (LCD Screen,Shutter) can be increased drasticly and they can offer even better quality.

Im not one of those guys who want a 36 exposure sd card or such stuff. I just dont need all the settings because after all i just wanna take a picture in the simplest way possible.

I looked up the leica Typ 240 60 years edition but i would still be missing the lever and hate that i have to charge a battery. They removed the lugs too, which is pretty "unwise" imo.

What are your thoughts? Possible, Impossible, useless?

Personally i would definetly spend money on such a thing.

I hope i hava a good read here ;)

cheers

Interesting thoughts, not sure if cloth shutters can be used with digital and I doubt a dynamo small enough exists to deliver the power needed but interesting never the less, cheers Rob

Well if a cloth is in front of a film and triggers or in front of a digital sensor, i dont think there is an difference. The 1/1k speed limit will be there tho.

Also what do you think what power a sensor needs for one shot?

I doubt that it will be so much much.

Enough power that it drains some heavy duty batteries pretty quickly and dynamo's are not particularly efficient, I assume digital needs metering as well? cheers Rob

I wouldnt say there has to be metering.

Hm may some Batteries like in an m6 ttl which you're recharging with each Advance.

And since the dont have to struggle with displays flipsy buttons and rotating bits... they can do what they can do best: Improve mechanical stuff! i think they could work it out.

I would love it.

Hi, I'm actually considering buying a new MP chrome ala carte. This is because I would like to have the traditional top engravings and vulcanite instead of the "shark skin". But this combination will need me to invest another $500.00. Now, this M-A seems to have EXACTLY what I want, without having to go ala carte. But no meter!! Should I just push the button and go learn Sunny 16?

Or find a MR-meter to slip on the top of the M-A. The speed dial has the slot necessary to couple the MR-meter.

Dom,

I bought an MP a la carte almost a year ago. Even a couple changes over the bog standard MP and you've run the price up pretty well. The Vulkanit I got (I disliked the sharkskin too) is what you'll find on the M240, not what is on my M3, but who knows what Leica is up to nowadays. Perhaps they've gone "back" to the old bumpy stuff like their configurator implies. It took six weeks to arrive and cost me a lot but I'm curiously unmoved by that. Maybe wait a bit until some non-expert field reports on the M-A start coming in, then decide in a calm state. Spending this kind of money should be done when you're cold-blooded, but no need to be sober.
