Leica Blog Posted September 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica M-A is a new rangefinder film camera. It's a Leica MP but it doesn't have exposure metering, battery or any electronics at all. The post Leica M-A – Purely Mechanical appeared first on Leica Forum Blog. Read more... Firefly Posted September 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 16, 2014 Wonder if this means that a MR5 is on the way? cheers Rob
Timmyjoe Posted September 16, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 16, 2014 So it's basically an M2. Is the black finish black chrome, or black paint?

plasticman Posted September 16, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had an M2 for a while and in many ways it was my favorite M, but issues with the rangefinder meant I sold it (at a large discount because of the fault), and really this new camera would be exactly what I was actually looking for. Great photokina for Leica - love this camera and even hoping they might release a production version of the M60.
andybarton Posted September 16, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 16, 2014 It's an M4 It has the M2 rewind, not the lever rewind. Not that it matters - it's an M-A
wattsy Posted September 16, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 16, 2014 M-A is also cheaper than MP. That's got to be a first for Leica. £3100 according to the PDF on the Leica Mayfair website. The prices for the Noctilux and 35 Summilux also seem to have been reduced (a little) if anyone's interested.
250swb Posted September 16, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2014 Haven't Leica missed a trick by not having a light meter to sell alongside it? Steve
Firefly Posted September 16, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 16, 2014 Haven't Leica missed a trick by not having a light meter to sell alongside it? Steve Hence my posting about a MR5, should be a good seller with all those unmetered M's around and the MR4 being way beyond its design life, cheers Rob
Guest camera man Posted September 16, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 16, 2014 The new camera may be cheaper with out the light meter but it could also mean that the camera has cheaper internal parts?
normclarke Posted September 17, 2014 Share #13 Posted September 17, 2014 It's an M4P with M2 control's, I think it would have been better to have the M4/M4-2 framelines which are more accurate than the paired lines. Best, normclarke.
MarkP Posted September 17, 2014 Share #14 Posted September 17, 2014 M-A is also cheaper than MP. That's got to be a first for Leica. I don't get it. Leica dropped a feature (light meter) for purity and dropped the price. It must be a mistake.
NJH Posted September 17, 2014 Share #15 Posted September 17, 2014 578g. Nice. If I was rich I would buy one.
alun Posted September 17, 2014 Share #16 Posted September 17, 2014 It's handsome - how could it not be? But isn't it the meterless MP that was briefly available eight or nine years ago? Not that it matters, of course. It's just a new old Leica for people with plenty of money who don't already have an old old Leica.
trastevere Posted September 18, 2014 Share #17 Posted September 18, 2014 Is there any word on the kind of shutter used? Is it the rubberized cloth? And for that matter, is the rangefinder mechanism the tuned-up M variety?
andybarton Posted September 18, 2014 Share #18 Posted September 18, 2014 Given that it is a purely mechanical camera, could the shutter be anything else?
jpattison Posted September 18, 2014 Share #19 Posted September 18, 2014 Hence my posting about a MR5, should be a good seller with all those unmetered M's around and the MR4 being way beyond its design life, cheers Rob Notice that the M-A's shutter dial has the cut out for an MR4 type meter. I have just bought an MR4 for my M4, there are still good accurate working units out there; use a Wein Cell PX625 1.35v Mercury Free Battery rather than a 1.5v which would mean re-calibrating the meter. duoenboge Posted September 18, 2014 Share #20 Posted September 18, 2014 Hai. The M-A is a very beautifully Leica M. Its the MP (in my opinion one of the most prety Leicas ever) without exposure metering. Nobody need it except people who are leaving on the top of Mont Everest or directly on the north or south pole whe is not so easy to buy some batteries. I suppose in this regions is also difficult to buy films or find a laboratory to develope it. So for what this camera when its possible to purchase a MP or M7 or M? On this Photokina Leica present in my opinion only very beautifully dust catcher for the vitrine. I expected more. Enjoy your treasuries.
