Guest Posted May 26, 2015 Share #161 Posted May 26, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... (now replaced by the 50/2.4). I like the hood and E39 filter size on this lens. I thought the newer f/2.4 Summarit had a E46 sized filter?

Ellie Posted May 26, 2015 Share #162 Posted May 26, 2015 I thought the newer f/2.4 Summarit had a E46 sized filter? Yes the newer has E46. My Summarit is the older one with E39 filter size.
Guest Posted May 26, 2015 Share #163 Posted May 26, 2015 Gotcha. I misunderstood that you had replaced it with the newer f/2.4 version and that it had somehow maintained the E39 size without me knowing.
FredR Posted May 27, 2015 Share #164 Posted May 27, 2015 How do the electronics in the M7 change the aperture and the shutter speed? Do motors or servos or mainsprings mechanically shift settings? The only Leica I've owned is an M6TTL. Fred
Mark T Posted May 27, 2015 Share #165 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) How do the electronics in the M7 change the aperture and the shutter speed? Do motors or servos or mainsprings mechanically shift settings? The only Leica I've owned is an M6TTL. Fred The M7 only changes the shutter speed. Aperture is still manual as with all Leica lenses. The shutter timing mechanism in the M7 is governed by electromagnets rather than timing gears. The shutter itself is the same and is set when you wind on the film. When the shutter is released it still works with springs and brakes in the same manner as every other film M. Edited May 27, 2015 by Mark T
Ellie Posted May 27, 2015 Share #166 Posted May 27, 2015 Fred, the shutter itself is different from all other M cameras. From the M7 manual: Rubberized cloth shutter, extremely low noise. Electronically controlled with 2 mechanically controlled shutter speeds, 1/60s and 1/125s.
Mark T Posted May 27, 2015 Share #167 Posted May 27, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Fred, the shutter itself is different from all other M cameras. From the M7 manual: Rubberized cloth shutter, extremely low noise. Electronically controlled with 2 mechanically controlled shutter speeds, 1/60s and 1/125s. Exactly - it has the same rubberised cloth shutter as the M3! The difference is in the mechanism that controls the timing of the shutter curtains, not in the shutter curtains and associated brakes, springs etc themselves. When shot in manual mode only (not auto), 1/60 and 1/125 are then regulated by timing gears in the manner of M3-M6.
colonel Posted May 27, 2015 Share #168 Posted May 27, 2015 Now is an appropriate time to repeat that the M7's electronic shutter is the most accurate of all the film Leicas I believe it is also the quietest since the M3 as pointed out.

Thanks for the repetition colonel, and the M7's shutter is even quieter than that of the M3 as it has no whirring timing gears during long exposures. Really great stuff!
Doc Henry Posted June 22, 2015 Author Share #170 Posted June 22, 2015 (edited) Hi All, M7 (or my MP) allows me to have beautiful pictures on paper through my enlarger and Ilford paper and what a great pleasure to be in front of his enlarger rather than his computer (requiring photo software) and inkjet printer. My photos in b&w (enlarger "sensitizing" silver bromide grains inside a paper) compared with the inkjet print pictures (laser and only "deposit" ink on a "plan" paper) is without appeal , sharper and more shade, deep black.... Thanks
stephen.w Posted June 22, 2015 Share #173 Posted June 22, 2015 Lovely I presume an alacarte M7 ? Was it second hand or new ? If new what is the percentage premium for alacarte ? Thanks Harold, it is a new a la carte camera. The main change I wanted was the 0.58x finder, as I am predominantly a 35mm shooter (and of my 5 M lenses have nothing wider than 28mm or nothing longer than 50mm). I also added (or subtracted, rather) the engraving and logo, and the vulcanite covering (the latter was a waste, because it is absolutely nothing like the vulcanite on the older M cameras, and even earlier ALC MPs and M7s). I paid a premium of roughly 10% on the standard serial number price. I now have something very close to my perfect M camera.
beckzito Posted June 22, 2015 Share #174 Posted June 22, 2015 Congrats, Stephen The 0.58 viewfiinder should be great with the 28mm but not so with the 35 and even more, the 50mm, IMO. As you said you mainly shoot 35, i am guessing you are confortable with the decision, though. The layout of your leica seems marvelous!

I've used the standard 0.72x finder, which was my first and for years only M, but I prefer the single unpaired 35mm frame and the larger space around the frame.
