Rumor: Leica to Announce Digital Rangefinder Without an LCD Screen at Photokina

I'm sure in 1957 people reacted in the same ways to the idea that a few years after the M3 was so acclaimed that Leitz would introduce a new LTM camera. But even then "purists" complained the M3 was too big. Hence, the IIIg was released, nearly the same size as the IIIf with bigger viewfinder.

No, it didn't sell well, but those of us who have one appreciate the effort, and with my old eyes it is easier to use than the "f" is now. Shooting a III series still has attraction.

Leica could repeat the strategy - probably with equal "success."

Well see some other uses of LCD. When people approach me upon seeing my M they often ask if it's a digital camera. Rather than relying on my word just point to LCD and case is closed.

Also, are we all too young here to recall use of Polaroids in studios and elsewhere? Being able to test the exposure, lighting, color and histogram etc seems an inherent feature of digital that one wouldn't wish to forego.

That said I usually don't chimp but do on occasion. Only way to assure you've captured a fast moving whale or shot people with eyes open or gotten the full orchestra in your shot.

Purism that reduces inherent advantages seems highly unlikely except for perhaps a few on this forum. :)

I remember reading an interview with a White House photographer, who recounted the press pack photographing the President as he walked down a corridor. He couldn't believe how many of them were chimping the moment he had passed them.

If I had to choose between a digital M with the dimensions of a film M, or one with an LCD but the dimensions of the current digital M, I'd choose the former.

Mike.

Perhaps there a half truth in the rumor: not a M body but a LCD less X body ; the press often mistakenly calls anything that is not in the style of a SLR a digital 'rangefinder'

The X type 113 with Wi-Fi could have a stronger tilt to retro than the X1,X2.

OVF, no rear LCD, WiFi/Bluetooth iPhone connection for image review.

Add a twist out lens like the Fuji X20, and it could look very Barnack like - just the thing for a 100 year anniversary.

Everybody chimps. Everybody. Except film users. :) Even people who say they don't and people who temporarily adopt a discipline of avoiding it. Chimping has its obvious hazards, such as missing a good photo. But not chimping has its obvious hazards too. Photographers learn when to chimp and when not to chimp, accepting that it's a good tool and a good practice if used judiciously.

You want to bet. I've tried chimping a film camera but it doesn't work and I felt rather daft afterwards:D (I'll bet I'm far from alone). I'm used to the display now - gaffer tape solves the problem for those who don't want to use one and its excellent value....

Clearly a thread/subject that excites a lot of interest. Regarding the 'form factor' aspect whether it be M7 or MP, at risk of even further thread drift, I beg to differ. M240 and M7 feel very similar, MP feels better in my hand but for sheer delight (visually plus in terms of tactility and 'fondleness'), my IIIg is the definite winner. :) After all, look at how Nikon and Olympus etc have tried to create retro-style cameras with knobs and dials etc etc (and failed miserably). So there we have - Leica will jump on the bandwagon and introduce a digital Barnack...

IMO: I love shooting with Leica screw mount camera, especially it size but I also love shooting M240 with no problem with it size. One day I hope, when technology and cost met, the very tin lcd on the back of camera size of Leica IIIf.

Why not go all the way.

just have a string hanging out of the body to pull the shutter back for cocking!

It could even be incorporated as a wrist trap.

Just hang the camera from your wrist for auto cocking.
