Tabbed vs. Untabbed Lenses

Can someone explain to me the preference that most people have for tabbed lenses? I find that I'm noticeably slower to focus my tabbed lenses (40mm Summicron, 50mm and 35mm Summilux) vs. my untabbed lenses. I simply find it easier to grip and turn the focus ring than I do to manipulate it with a single finger. Am I missing something in my technique?

I definately prefer them as I can focus more precisely and faster. But I can appreciate that some people dont like them. It would be nice if it was possible to have a choice to have them put on or taken of during service. At a cost, of course.

Did you try to hold tabbed lenses this way?

I really like the tabbed lenses because it lets me set focus distance without looking at the lens. Its handy for lenses 35mm and below but for my 50mms I don't use it very often. For fine focusing I prefer using the knurled barrel.

Depends a lot on the size of the lens. The v2 Summicron 35 would be almost impossible to focus without the tab:
