wilfredo Posted July 20, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted July 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone using a Voigtlander Color Heliar 75mm f/2.5 Leica screw mount lens on a Leica MM? I'm looking for something in the 75mm range that won't break the bank. Thanks!
Advertisement Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Hi wilfredo, Take a look here Voigtlander Color Heliar 75mm f/2.5 lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted July 21, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted July 21, 2014 It is an excellent lens. Sean Reid rates it alongside the 75mm Summarit as an equal, and I can't find fault with it, it's sharp, nice tonality (not harsh), and much cheaper. menos I M6 Posted July 21, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted July 21, 2014 Go for it - it's a great lens. Â It takes 43mm filters and even with it's screw on lens hood attached is very small and lightweight to also carry in the bag.
gyoung Posted July 21, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted July 21, 2014 Can't speak for rhe MM but mine works beautifully on a III, an M3 and an M6 Â Gerry
TheGodParticle/Hari Posted July 21, 2014 Share #5  Posted July 21, 2014 (edited) Fantastic lens - worth twice the money it costs! The smallest and lightest of my 75mm's.  Some samples off my M9:  http://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20124/2221_L1025031_1.jpg  http://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20124/2221_L1025334_1.jpg  http://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20124/2221_L1025039_1.jpg  http://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20124/2221_L1025079_1.jpg Edited July 21, 2014 by TheGodParticle broken url

uhoh7 Posted July 22, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted July 22, 2014 both the 75/2.5 and the 90/3.5 are sweet on the M9.
wilfredo Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #9 Â Posted July 22, 2014 It is interresting to note that this lens has a loyal fan base among Leica shooters on this forum. Certainly the price is an incentive. I will have to go to Adorama and check it out. Thank you all!
pfhrased Posted July 22, 2014 Share #10 Â Posted July 22, 2014 haven't used it on the MM, but on my M9 it has wonderful separation, colour and rendering.
klaush Posted July 22, 2014 Share #11 Â Posted July 22, 2014 A great lens, good buy. I used it for several years - M8, M9, now M.
menos I M6 Posted July 22, 2014 Share #12  Posted July 22, 2014 Hey Wilfredo,  Here is a small selection I just uploaded to my flickr, showing how the 75 Heliar looks like on the Mono. It is not a super sharp lens, lacking that special cracking punch wide open, a 50 Summicron or the Leica 75 Summicron would show, but it does have a special something I like. It's tiny, lightweight (yet with a really beautiful built quality) and renders nice, smooth backgrounds. It has a medium contrast already wide open, delivering files with the Mono that allow for plenty of contrast in the scene, not cutting off blacks entirely - it is my sunny day 75mm lens (Shanghai has REALLY high contrasts during the summer days).  L1060417-M Monochrom—for_flickr by teknopunk.com, on Flickr  M Monochrom - first shots - man walking dog meeting another man by teknopunk.com, on Flickr  M Monochrom - first shots - portrait - two generations by teknopunk.com, on Flickr  M Monochrom - first shots - worker preparing a tool handle by teknopunk.com, on Flickr

wilfredo Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #14 Â Posted July 22, 2014 Thanks for posting these Dirk. I agree, the photos have a certain "je ne sais quoi" that I think is part of the Leica look. I have a 50mm ASPH LUX, it's a very sharp lens, but I don't always need that sharpness. This lens, will mostly be a portrait lens. It is a definite contender. Women hate my 50mm ASPH LUX!
250swb Posted July 22, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted July 22, 2014 It is a sharp lens, but it has less micro contrast than the Leica, and contrast is often confused with sharpness. Â Steve
menos I M6 Posted July 23, 2014 Share #16 Â Posted July 23, 2014 Wilfredo, women will love the 75/2.5, they would love more a 75 Summilux though ;-) Â Steve, let's settle on "the 75/2.5 shows a lot less detail than comparable modern lenses at wide apertures". Â I don't specialise in specific phrases, many forum users are professing in :-( The 75/2.5 (I have had three) shows a LOT less detail below f4 on both M9 and Mono than 75 Summilux, 85 Nikkor LTM, 85 Canon LTM. It is a characteristic, I see immediately when bringing up a shot in a set on my computer and can be seen in prints. Â If one wants fine detail from this lens, it has to be stopped down to f4 at least. It does have a certain smoothness to it's background rendering in return though and probably buys its compactness in big part with the loss in detail/ sharpness/ micro contrast, or what ever you want to call it. Â I would NOT recommend the 75mm when fine detail (like skin texture) should be resolved at wide apertures.
wilfredo Posted July 23, 2014 Author Share #17 Â Posted July 23, 2014 Dirk: Â Your comments are well received. I will be using this lens mostly for portraiture and I don't want excessive detail. I've seen some very convincing photos with this lens on Flickr, with the lens on Leica cameras. I decided to go for it. I found one today in minty condition at Adorama, and purchased it for $389.00. It looks almost new even though they rated it Excellent +. I took a few shots with it on my Leica MM, and I will put them on the computer screen later tonight for a close look. So far so good! wilfredo Posted July 24, 2014 Author Share #18 Â Posted July 24, 2014 Well, I got to see some shots tonight on the computer screen and I'm very pleased. I can tell I will be getting good mileage from this lens. It's a keeper. My thanks to all those who helped me make the decision.
