Blunderer Posted May 2, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For you info - just seen the latest Amateur photographer, in which it said that Leica had confirmed to them that they won't be producing any more digital R system cameras. Â Apparently Leica haven't announced this on their web-site for fear of it impacting on the sales of the remaining cameras.
Advertisement Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Hi Blunderer, Take a look here End of the DMR. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bono0272 Posted May 2, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 2, 2007 This is not news. Although it does not appear in the Leica web, but thru the dealers the DMR discontinuation had been announced for months.
Blunderer Posted May 2, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 2, 2007 apologies - the title of the thread is incorrect - it meant to say the R9
bono0272 Posted May 2, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Is that true? Does it mean no more R cameras (even the expected R10 - integrated body digital), or just imply no more production of R9 + DMR? Â If it is the first case, that means Leica closes the R-line R&D???
masjah Posted May 2, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 2, 2007 To quote the AP piece: "Leica has quietly 'phased out' its Digital-Modul-R digital back less than two years after its launch, but confirmed that the R9 camera system will remain".
jaapv Posted May 2, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Apparently Leica haven't announced this on their web-site for fear of it impacting on the sales of the remaining cameras. Â Seems a bit unlikely. Normally such an announcement produces a rush of last-chance buyers.
hdg Posted May 2, 2007 Share #7  Posted May 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) As expected. The Leica-plan was to sell a certain quantity (about 5000 pieces !?!) of the DMR´s in a certain time. This has happened. To produce a further serie means another production of 1000 pieces minimum. I doubt that this quantity can be sold.  You should look for the RD10 as I do.  Regards Hans, but at this moment very happy with his R9+DMR-Combo

Blunderer Posted May 2, 2007 Author Share #10 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Disinformation is your friend Blunderer. Nice attempt though... ddp Posted May 2, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Blunderer....no problem. I see that you were making an honest attempt here....we seem to have an abundance of troublemakers these days poking around, and you're not one of them. Â Welcome to the forum! rsh Posted May 2, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted May 2, 2007 I beleive there is sufficient stock of the R9 to meet demand until the R10 comes out. From an economic standpoint, it makes no sense for Leica to continue making a camera with so little demand. The company can ill afford to lose money making a product that is not selling well. That said, I feel the R9 is Leica's best SLR ever. Personally, I do not own one as I have two older SL2s that work just fine. Â I do hope the R10 will be autofocus with backward compatibility. Â I also believe that once the existiong stock of MPs and M7s is depleted, you will only be able to purchase a new M a la carte.

Come on guys, how do you prodcue cameras and lenses - in badges. I am pretty sure that Leica is not producing a lot of lenses right now, should we call all of them discontinued? Trouble starts when parts go out of stock, and not when they are discontinued. Who cares if the R9 is not produced anymore if Leica is sitting on enough stock, same for the 80, 28, 35, ... lenses. rsh Posted May 2, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted May 2, 2007 One addition to my earlier post. I believe that Leica is on the right track. They have some great products. I would buy a D3 tomorrow if I had not just purchased the M8 and 3 three new lenses. And with Private School for the kids around the corner, it may be awhile. earleygallery Posted May 3, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted May 3, 2007 BJP reports Leica as saying that they produced X no of DMR's which they expected to be about as many as they could sell. It was much more successful than they thought and has therefore sold out earlier than expected, however they don't think that they would be able to sell enough of a 2nd run, therefore it is economically unviable for them to produce any more DMR's. They will continue to service/support however.
