Understrength Gorilla?

For what it's worth, the ExpertShield soft protector (see Amazon) is cut perfectly for the M240 and doesn't peel off on its own like the factory-provided one does. $10 is cheaper than the cost of postage for sending an M to a service center.

The iPhone 4s has Gorilla Glass, and I can tell you that this thing has ridden in the same pocket as my keys for 2 years and only has one scratch (which may have been dropping it on cement). Apropos of same, the only chips on that screen are in the plastic gasket aroubd it. Very impressive.

What argument? It's a discussion.

Another typical blanket statement.

The iPhone doesn't have anything to,do,with the screen on the M240.

Different application. Different piece of equipment. Different material.

Saying your iPhone is scratched to justify the scratches on an LCD camera screen is like saying your car windshield has scratches so your camera screen should be too.

I've not been here long but I have blitzed all the lens and m240 threads and I am certain that a topic we won't argue about does not exist.

I don't think of it so much as arguing - more along the lines of debating.

It should be obvious to even the most casual observer that this legendary forum is a stronghold of legions of astute and formidable master debaters.

Agreed, but on some threads including this one, there are too many snide, gratuitous and unnecessary remarks for my taste. Hecklers? C'mon, just users expressing legitimate concerns.

I have Giottos screen protectors on all of my digital Ms including the Monochrom.

No scratches, I like the improved screen contrast, and I don't have to post in the forum that I'm grumpy about a scratched screen.

Mark, I'm very interested in putting a Giottos screen protector on my M 240. Can you please tell me whether the screen protector stands proud from the screen, and whether it causes any other issues (like catching on clothing, inside of camera bag, etc.). WIth the screen protector fitted, are would you still be able to fit a half-case? BTW, I live in Australia too, where is the best place to buy Giottos screen protectors? Nick

  • 2 weeks later...

Today I noticed an obvious scratch on the display on my M240 I bought in May. I've shot with Canons for years, in some very rough conditions and never had a display scratch. While it doesn't effect how the camera works, I'm disappointed. I was expecting some brassing would occur before my screen scratched. :(

Anyone know of way a scratch in the display can buffed out?

Hi Nick,

I only just saw your post.

The protector increases the depth of the screen by about 0.5 ± 0.05mm (Giottos official specs).

It is really not noticeable once fitted and never catches on things.

No problems fitting half-cases, either the Leica or the snug-fitting Arte di Mano.

I simply ordered two of the Giottos screens from an eBay dealer.

PM me for the sellers details if you're interested.

Regards,

MArk

The best glass screen protector I've seen is the Larmor. Why it's better than Giottos is because 1) it has a laminated safety layer so if the glass cracks it stays together instead of breaking into sharp shards that can scratch the LCD. 2) it adheres by static cling via a silicone layer, rather than a strip of double-stick tape only around the periphery that leaves the center of the glass able to flex against the LCD. I've got one on my Nex-6 and it is great. Sadly they don't list one that fits the M240 TTBOMK, but if anyone knows of another camera with the exact same size LCD???

As I share the concern that a thin glass screen protector might shatter under impact and cause damage to the LCD screen I use an Acmaxx screen protector. I understand that it is made from polycarbonate and is available in the correct size for the M240. I have used these protectors on different cameras over the past three years and found them very satisfactory.

I have not had that problem even in Western Australia during the summer. I have heard that if you want to remove the protector warming with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and using dental floss is the way to do it. If this is the case I suppose really high environmental temperatures could cause movement. As I live in the UK this is rarely an issue.

Devices I have that came with the Gorilla Glass all ended up with some scratches. More like spider web type scratches. One of the cellphones with the glass fell. Instead of shattering, it ended up with a lot of fine cracks and a lot of powder like residue.

I've left the lamination that came with the camera... although I want to remove it and see the LCD in all it's glory, I am just too afraid to not have any protection on the screen.

If anyone has found a wonderful screen protector that is also removable... please shout it out. I've used Giottos protectors for years but it seems like things have changed. A dealer I do business with threw three of them out before finding one where the quality of the product was good enough to mount.... so I am shying away from them.

Distressingly true; in addition to our wealth of master debaters who at times are sources of comic relief, we are also regrettably afflicted with more than a few folk who exhibit an absence of consideration and basic common courtesy for other human beings.    One would expect more of an attitude of fraternal congeniality among connoisseurs of Leica cameras and lenses; too often,  attitudes of malice and condescension prevail.

It would appear that for some forum members, the financial affluence that makes owning Leica cameras and lenses possible comes bonded like conjoined twins to a formidable cache of arrogance and verbal aggression.

I submit that such a pairing is the hallmark of a man who is large in cash reserves and small in integrity.
