I'm joining the M240 ranks!

I had every intention of remaining with the M9 until it bit the proverbial dust, but today I found an official waranteed Leica demo M240 for a grand under new price so I decided YOLO and to go for it. Should be here Monday. After owning a black M8 and M9 I opted to go silver this time. Picked up a spare OEM battery (found a slightly used one for a $50 savings...hopefully it will have lots of charges left in it, and no issues), a couple of new 16GB Sandisk Extreme Pro cards, and a slightly used Leica never-ready case for a bit more than the half case (I will use the bottom half mainly, and I like the idea of the back flap cover..and that the battery can be changed w/out removing the case). I already have an Olympus EVF I bought a while ago for cheap.

Now I just hope and pray the camera has no issues...that would be a bummer :( I'll probably keep my M9 until I'm sure the M240 is working properly, but eventually plan to sell it to recoup some cash.

Few questions for you veterans (I did a lot of searching but got bogged down and laziness set in :p) :

1. I understand the jpegs from the M240 are pretty decent compared to the M9/8. True? I would really love to be able to shoot jpegs...so much easier to give images to others like that without having to convert them.

2. My stash of 2GB Sandisk Ultra-II cards...aside from the limited capacity (not an issue) are there other issues to be leery of using them in the M240?

3. (Not a question) I'm thinking about possibly keeping the M9 to shoot monochrome jpegs...sort of a really poor man's MM :D

4. Other than the Leica brand, what R-to-M adaptor have you found decent? I have just a 400/6.8 Telyt-V and V-to-R adaptor, so I would like a reasonably-priced R-to-M adaptor to use that one lens on it.

I'm excited!!!

JPEG are pretty good

Mine 4 Gb ultra II works fine. Not as fast as a rocket, but works. The real problem is that a 2 Gb will last as a Velvia 36 exp :D

No idea about adapters. I use only M lenses.

You will love M240.

Given that you're laying out, I'd probably think about getting some new cards. I'd also make sure that you get the SDFormatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/) and format any cards that you're using with this. It will reduce risks of apparent slow startup.

re JPEGS, as someone who's never shot a JPEG on an M, but who has shared thousands of images, I find myself bemused. You get Lightroom with the camera. Just ingest the images to whatever device you're working with and then make JPEG conversions at whatever resolution you need to export. It seems crazy to depend on pre-cooked images when you have all the flexibility of RAW just sitting there waiting to be used.

Since the $1000 saving was significant enough to persuade you to buy the M (excellent decision by the way!) suggesting that you are not indifferent to good economic sense, I would advise against keeping the M9 purely for its monochrome abilities. I don't think it has an advantage over the M in this respect.

I find the Novoflex adapters very usable.

Thanks I have the formatter and did get 2 new 16GB cards.

The jpegs out of most digital cameras other than the M8 and 9 are good enough 99% of the time for 99% of viewers, and sharing them involves no added steps on my part. And as much as I love taking pictures is as much as I despise postprocessing in any form :)

Thanks. And the 9 makes a good backup, I just figured to put it to some ongoing use as well. But moneywise it makes more sense to sell it before long.

Check with Leica and ask the seller for the serial No.-

My first Leica M (240) had to be recalled after I registered the camera.

Leica will pick the camera up and return it to you at no costs.

Within a certain batch the camera strap holder had a fault, meaning the camera might just fall off your neck.....- I never send the camera in because I use a strap with a hidden titanium wire, that avoids the quick cur and run thieves.

I can think of many better cameras and phones to use for taking and sharing JPEG's and avoiding post processing.

Im with Bocaburger. 99%+ of the time any given photo at any given point does not benefit from being taken in RAW.

I would have to side with Chris Tribble, I couldn't imagine shooting in anything other than RAW unless they were just unimportant snaps. RAW can save us from so mane exposure errors but most importantly is a lossless format to edit with unlike jpegs and let's face it, even the best taken shots benefit from a tweak here and there. Just my humble opinion though, I'm sure there are some very good JPEG only photographers out there.

I did read about that but thanks. I have only read of serials starting with 44 and 46 being recalled. This one starts with 48. Has anyone with a 48 had theirs called in? Plus it's a Leica demo, so I would hope it would have been sorted if it was affected.

When and if I encounter a shot I think is going to be worth the effort of postprocessing and converting, it's a simple matter to switch the camera to raw/dng. I know how to postprocess, I just don't like doing it. I'm a pure extrovertm, and it's the shooting part of photography, engaging with the world around me, that is why I do it. I find sitting behind a computer postprocessing files to be intolerably tedious. But when and if I find a shot that I feel I will want to print, I do switch to raw/DNG. Except with the M8 and M9 I found I actually had less postprocessing (especially the color balance) with dngs.

I'd recomend you to try Capture One instead of LR that comes with the camera.

C1 RAW converter works much better with the M than Adobe IMHO.

Hi I have Capture One leftover from my M8 and I was very happy to get shed of it when the LR freebie came with the M9. Maybe it's that I'm a CS user and there was familiarity, Idk. I take it LR comes free with the M240...that's another requisite for me. I've never paid for image editing software yet, in 15 years of shooting digital.

The Novoflex R-to-M adapter works well.

Thanks. I found and bought one. It's an older one without coding though. The only thing coding does is access the R lens menu to identify it in the EXIF info, correct? I can always code it (I coded all my wide angle M lenses) but I don't see why I would bother given I only have one R lens (400 Telyt) and don't care if it shows up in EXIF or not. Or are there optical corrections the firmware will apply? Is the old 400/6.8 even listed in the menu???
