Advice for selling

I would really appreciate some guidance on the best way to sell Leica items, I am not looking for the absolutely best price rather the safest / hassle free way to go about it.

I have never used ebay for either buying nor selling.

I am based in Dordogne region of France.

Any guidance gratefully received, with kind thanks in advance.

I would try the buy-and-sell in this forum. Most users have good results.

It is unfortunately not allowed to list them in the technical forums.

Thanks to David & Jaap I shall indeed then try the buy & sell on this site. Apologies for listing the items on the forum here and thus triggering the edit from Jaap.

I'm willing to be corrected on this point, but as far as safety is concerned my personal view is that the model adopted by the Buy and Sell on this site isn't the safest: the log-in on that section is handled separately from the rest of the site, and to the best of my knowledge there's nothing stopping someone from registering with a name used by another member on the main site, and masquerading as them when buying your equipment.

Also there is no way of building good reputation through repeated and trustworthy buying/selling with user feedback.

Not wanting to knock this site or the income that keeps it going, but other sites (such as RFF) have possibly implemented a safer system which is more tightly coupled to membership of the wider discussion forum.

If you are concerned about on-line sales, go to your dealer and ask him to sell the items for you on commission.

When I use the B&S I tend to sell to known members. I very much doubt that your scenario is likely, given that the IP addresses are being registered. And I will use the main site PM system to correspond.

It's just these scenarios I've run up against in the past - it can be a delicate operation buying or selling, and people can take offense if distrust is the basis for a transaction. Anyway wherever there's any doubt naturally just saying you will PM someone on their forum address is the best way to go.

Nonetheless, I'm uncomfortable with the fact that the two environments are wholly separate: I once almost sent a lens ahead of receiving a payment that was supposed to be on its way, but which never arrived, from someone who I believe is an established member on the German side of the forum. Anyway, I let the incident go as I was never really sure if the exchanges were wholly rational.

The joys of using the Internet for transactions....;)

It can sometimes be better than meeting people in real life though. ;)

But seriously - I do wish the RFF system could have been implemented here. I especially like that feedback is persistent for both buyers and sellers on that site.

But if users of the buy&sell are satisfied here then naturally my worries are misplaced. No-one is forced to use it, after all.

I would and have sold camera equipment through an intermediary--KEH.com in the United States. They are a large buyer of used equipment of all types. Don't know if they will buy foreign equipment, but their site is worth looking at to get a sense of value.

They have always been fair with me. I take a haircut, but I don't have to worry about a buyer calling a week later claiming the sensor was cracked or there was a scuff on a lens casing or that the lens back focuses. If you read photography forums( and you obviously read at least one), you know there are a lot of unreasonable nut cases out there who are looking for a fight.

I agree with Andy, take your equipment to a Leica dealer. You won't get top price because they need to make some profit, but it is then out of your hands with no comeback if something doesn't work, no unreasonable expectations about condition from disgruntled buyers, and your cheque won't bounce.

And if you are selling it to buy some different camera equipment the Leica dealer may be able to sweeten the transaction with better prices.

Thank you all again for your time and guidance it is now posted here in the buy & sell, if that fails then I shall probably follow the advice of Andy and go through the local dealership for a commission based sale.

I may just be too suspicious but, as I feared….

Me too made a pair of buy/sell operations through our section : in general, I think that it is rather right "as is"... a rather low volume market in which partecipants are rather confident to deal with peple that are well aware of the items involved; of course, such low volumes don't allow to make it a complete (and complex) e-commerce environment, but imho it is not what I do pretend from it ; I think also that it would be appreciable to have a unique registration_ID... just to stregthen the confidence factor... personally, I can't imagine a reason for I wouldn't like to be recognized when act as a seller/buyer.

Just as the best way to acquire your Leicas is to have a relationship with a dealer, that same dealer will appreciate the chance to have some used equipment to sell when you decide to change things. My dealer and I have just such a symbiotic relationship and items move back and forth between us.

I have bought and sold a few items through this forum and so far all of the experiences were very good. I understand it can be hard to trust someone you don't know and there is always risk involved if you are buying. But usually when you are selling you request the money first and only send the item after you receive the money so the risk will mainly be in the shipping of the product (and here you can opt for a more expensive shipping with insurance if you don't want to take any risk).

Well, if maximizing price is your goal I can offer some advice, but take it at your own risk!

If the item is something that commands a lot of interest in the resale world, then I use eBay.

I list the starting price as $1.

Now, it takes iron testicles to do this, but I have found that eBay shoppers go crazy when they see a ridiculously low starting price for something desirable and they pile on to bid and the bidding just keeps going at the end.

I have, much to the anxiety of my girlfriend, been shocked at the final sale price of such items.

However, it must be something that people want in high enough numbers to attract attention. You need to do your research on eBay for items already sold to get a feel how much of a market there is. The secret is getting as many bidders as possible.

If the item is a specialty item that only a few people would be interested in, then I would think hard about listing it at $1 starting bid.

Since you have never used eBay I would suggest letting a good friend that has a high seller rating sell it for you. People do not like to buy from someone that doesn't have a rating due to low or no previous sales.
