ShotCapture Posted May 3, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) :confused:Help. My new M 240 that I just got has a yellow cast on the screen, It's like bad white balance, which I thought it was till I noticed the tint on the menu screen too. My older M 240 looks normal and takes great photos. Put them side by side and the new one has a yellow screen and the older one a normal color. They are both set the same on all settings. Monitor brightness, DNG, white balance, etc. The older one has firmware 2.0.0.11, the new one 2.0.0.12 Any ideas?

bephoto Posted May 3, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 3, 2014 I got mine last year Oct and compared to my friend's M which he bought a month ago, I noticed the same yellowish tone in the newer M. not sure which one is more accurate haven't had the chance to compare them to a calibrated monitor. ShotCapture Posted May 3, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted May 3, 2014 :) It's a bad LCD batch. Leica will replace it for you. Thanks for the reply. A new camera is on its way. My dealer is taking care of it. Dan Tamarkin at Chicago's Tamarkin Camera. It pays to deal with a class act!

earleygallery Posted May 3, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 3, 2014 A problem like this always makes me ask the question - how did the cameras pass final inspection? Bob I wonder how many people out there have these faulty M's but are none the wiser, not having compared their screen to another?
jaques Posted May 4, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2014 I wonder what percentage of Leica M240's are replaced as faulty? My guesstimate is more than 25%- this is based on the many documented cases on this forum- and having spoken to Leica Australia and my own camera dealer about cameras coming back with issues and being replaced, and of course my own case where my first camera had to be replaced. I imagine Leica would be quite concerned about the many, many repairs they must be doing. .. and what do they do with all those replaced cameras? Refurbish and sell as new is my guess... also not really acceptable... and then I wonder how these cameras will fare over time... not very well is my sad conclusion. I have a feeling my M240 won't work correctly in 5 years and will not be economical to repair. I also have a feeling it will be the last digital Leica camera I ever buy. I just don't think you get the quality or the service you should get from such a premium and highly touted 'camera for life'. My lack of faith is partly based on the cost of Leica servicing. Leica S cameras with faults are already now not worth repairing in many cases.
jaapv Posted May 4, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 4, 2014 Nobody knows but Leica, but my guesstimate would be closer to less than one percent…And this is based on the number of cases on this forum related to the number that may have been sold. We know Leica has built between 20.000 and 30.000 of this type of camera per year in the past. Many, many repairs? I would say from the number of benches they had in Solms that Customer Service has less than a dozen repair persons at most. Quicksand logic, my friend, for any conclusion, sad or otherwise. jaques Posted May 4, 2014 Share #11 Posted May 4, 2014 I doubt very much 1%. That would be 300 from 30,000... On this forum I think I could find 30+ cases reported without too much difficulty. Great though it is I doubt this forum would represent 10% of users or even 5%. Of course- all I know for certain is I returned one- and I think you did also (if only for repair)? so out out of a sample of two that is 100%- and a total of four 50%. My replacement has a few little glitches so who knows how long that 50% figure will stand.. how's yours trucking? Speaking to Leica Australia and my dealer it was clear they had had multiple returns for a variety of faults- at a point where they had sold perhaps 100 cameras or less in Australia. Even if you don't take into account the lug recall- I think the number of cameras that have to be returned is high. I can't prove it- anymore than you can you prove 1%... I would have thought in this industry even 1% would not be considered a good figure? And as to the low number of repair benches at Solms: perhaps that reflects the long service times as much as the volume of service required? And do those people even deal with replaced bodies or are they sent somewhere else for refurbishing? when my camera self timer fired randomly I couldn't find anyone else who had that problem. Since then I have heard of 3 more cases. My guess is there are more than I have heard of... In any case, whilst my opinion may be unnecessarily cynical- I live in hope that I am proved wrong over time. I plan on using my M for a long time. MangoC Posted May 4, 2014 Share #12 Posted May 4, 2014 very interestingly, I checked mine, one bought back in Sept, last year and one in April last month. The new one does looks yellow to the one I bought back in last year. But when I checked the file on my Macbook, the new one (yellow) matches closer to what was showing on screen. so which is the correct one???

jaapv Posted May 6, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2014 For me it depends with which eye I look at them. With my left eye the righthand camera looks better, with my right eye the lefthand one. It wouldn't bother me. I find a camera LCD in general quite useless for judging colour anyway.
MangoC Posted May 6, 2014 Share #15 Posted May 6, 2014 and this is how it shows on the Macbook the color matches closer to the camera I just got last month and the old one I got back in last year is whiter but the color dose not match what was showing on the Macbook The yellowish one is closer to the real situation Welcome, dear visitor! rsh Posted May 8, 2014 Share #16 Posted May 8, 2014 To me, the color is better on the newer camera.
ShotCapture Posted May 9, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted May 9, 2014 Looks like there's no defect in the LCD screen. Leica says "Leica has made a change to the supplier of the LCD monitor and so the look is a bit warmer." I am going to go ahead and get one, though I'm disappointed to hear there is a color change and the two screens won't match. The times that it will matter to me are when I am using both cameras at once with different a lens on each. I'm sure I will adjust.
Herr Barnack Posted May 9, 2014 Share #18 Posted May 9, 2014 If this is the biggest worry we have with the M240, we are in good shape IMHO.
Exodies Posted May 9, 2014 Share #19 Posted May 9, 2014 Perhaps the new screen is better than the old one. After all, if you are changing it, why not improve it? It's strange that there is no colour calibration on the first display in the workflow.
250swb Posted May 9, 2014 Share #20 Posted May 9, 2014 I'm all for Leica making improvements as production goes on, and I'd far rather have my LCD optimistically warm than pessimistically cool. People are to quick to point fingers and find blame, and if making something better is cause for outrage and claims of mass ranks of re-furbished cameras heavens knows what happens when the neighbours cat craps in the flowerbed.
