And just as Leica never bothered to fix the continuous mode lockup in the M9, I don't think we should hold our breaths waiting for a new M Typ 240 update.

Or, more cynically, no rush to fix M9 issues so as to encourage owners to eventually buy an M update.

I'll be interested to see how many buyers are willing to continually become beta testers of each new product iteration, preferring instead to let the dust settle and/or skip generations until the old gear fails, or wait for used gear at depreciated prices (see S2).

Long term, full and efficient product support (not just FW updates, but supply and distribution, etc) is the only effective route. One hopes Leica sees, and reacts to, the obvious with the new factory.

Is no one else looking forward to this?

“Exposure compensation will work without pressing and holding down the button on the front"

Not really. I never use exposure compensation. Too much of guesswork for me. I prefer the precision of spot metering.

Actually there were no changes in .12 so I think it's only been 1 major update so far which was mainly focused on colour/skin tones and white balance...

Two updates so far 2.0.0.11 and 2.0.0.12. but no auto iso yet :(

I think we have to go to wetzlar and protest, block the streets, burn tires... so leica would listen

They are so busy with their Leica T "toy camera" they don't bother with M users. btw I want T :D

The ability to assign the movie button to *anything else* would be great. AE lock maybe?

Not sure of the value of re-assigning. I fund that using manual exposure gives a more subtle and effective control. Turning Video on or off does make sense though...

I agree that for no-video users (I am) that button, so easy to activate, could be useful for some other function, but apart a complex sw dev. to give the capabilty to ASSIGN the function you like (within a certain set) , I fear that any "cabled" choice (video or 1 other function) would result in a massive mix of "good" / "blah" / "unuseful" posts...

I prefer the precision of spot metering.

Really? I use the 'Force' myself. I feel the exposure before I pick up the camera. It's more intuitive, you feel more at one with the image.

None of this metering business for me.

:p

I never use exposure compensation either. AE lock works better for me but i have nothing against "force" or "intuition" even if i'm not sure to remember what it means exactly. Must have tried "intuition" (sunny 16?) in my youth but the Leicameter proved to be more accurate so i stopped worrying about that. YMMV of course ;).

I don't use AE either. I'm all manual on exposure. One issue I've had is that on the MP film body, the spot for the metering is just a circle in the center of the frame which I had an easier time calibrating for when there was a big light difference between foreground and background. With the M9/MM/M240, the paint across the frame seems to mess with me because it picks up more of the background. At least that's been my experience, but I used film bodies for longer than digital bodies, so maybe it's just still a learning process for me.

This.

I've had the M for 2 days now and took it out today for the first time.

I've been a bit puzzled by exposure. (I use only manual with all my cameras).

I was a bit confused by the readings I was getting : not the settings I was used to with my M6.

Then the review and histogram were way off compared to the meter, like : I would follow the meter to the half stop but my pictures were way over-exposed on the review. But I didn't worry too much because the histogram is based on the camera preview, it's not what you really get on the DNG.

Anyway, after a while I stopped using the camera meter altogether and just relied on experience (or "the force").

Eventually I got home and once uploaded to the computer, all the images were ok, as in : I could recover highlights from all but a couple of shots.

My first impression though is that the photos were I simply used the settings I would use on my M6 were better exposed.

I will have to properly test this tomorrow and compare the camera metering of different subjects with my sekonic incident meter.
