Improving the M240 via firmware? Why Not?

I like the new M. There are many improvements over the M9: quiet shutter, better ISO, Liveview, etc. I must emphasise: I really like this camera!

But there are some things that niggle me- some could possibly be fixed others no. Those that can't be fixed: oh well I can live without them... In this thread I would like to mention only those things that could possibly be fixed in firmware IM<HO:

1) Auto ISO. Why can't this work like on the m9 already?

2) Long Exposure. Is this limited due to hardware reasons- or some subjective 'Leica IQ' standard? If the latter I would prefer to have the option of a longer exposure and decide for myself whether the quality is good enough for me. After all Leica gave us ISO 2500 on the M9... Also I would like the option to not employ dark frame subtraction if I want to. The best situation of all would be if it could be applied to selected images after a shoot if it is required.

3) The M Movie Button. Why o Why did Leica decide that this should be the Movie Button: and not the Multifunction Button?? It seems to me that it would be a lot better if you could disable the video mode and assign a different function to the M button if you wanted to. Same goes for the zoom button on the front of the camera come to think of it... I would like to be able to swap those functions over for sure! The M button is in a very handy place- but so far I have only used it a few times and don't see that changing- I like the video option but I don't use it much. So much better for me if I could use that button for zoom focusing!! Perhaps ISO for you?

4) Play Back Mode with EVF. Why did Leica set it up so that when you press Play it plays in the EVF and Not the LCD? This creates a constant annoyance. One must press play- then the button on the EVF. To be sure of each button press one must move ones head into the EVF or away from the camera like an idiot. It should play on the rear LCD default and play in the EVF first: if you want it to. This seems to me incontrovertible truth: like 2 + 2 = 4... no??

5) Lens Profiles: this is somewhere where Leica didn't keep up with themselves:rolleyes:. The M240 opens up a whole universe of lens possibilities: well and truly beyond just Leica R glass. Leica should not be coy about this fact but celebrate it.

The M240 should allow you to create your own custom lens profiles. Worlds Best Practice would dictate the ability to create your own correction profiles in cameras as the Sony A7 does... But failing that Leica could have allowed the user to at least assign the closest matching Leica lens code/correction and name each profile manually to match ones own lenses.

For those reactionaries who will surely say 'what business is it of Leica's to support other manufacturers lenses in any capacity?': I say unto you; what of Leica heritage M39 screw mount glass, eh? Wouldn't it be nice to custom code that old Elmar?

6) The Horizon/Level Grid Business: why can't this be viewed over the image??

Why??

that's all I can think of for now:rolleyes:. If anyone else can think of something obvious that could possibly be improved via an agressive and ambitious firmware upgrade program implemented at Solms... feel free to add to my list.

If anyone knows why any of these suggested improvements are SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE- please feel free to explain why...

and I repeat: I really like this camera as is! I just think it could be improved... and Why Not?

About a year ago, shortly after the M240 became available, a thread was created that covered forum members' usability wishes (not just the color or lens profiles issues) that might be addressed through a FW update.

The above, along with many others, were included. A quick search should enable you to locate the thread.

Hopefully these wishes have been reviewed by Leica and may (or not) make it to a future FW update, if that ever happens before the next M is announced...

This one... only seems like a year.

OK Pangloss: it may not be broke but it's NOT perfect...

And anyhow: no worries; if Leica manages to actually implement these things- you can always keep your existing firmware and your 'best of all possible worlds' camera - AS IS. ;-)

4. Whilst it is indeed an annoyance, I am puzzled by the remark that one “ must move one’s head away[….] to make sure of the button press.” Isn’t the point that one wants to look at the LCD so one will not have one’s eye to the EVF anyway?

I think the technical reason is that preview is linked to playback, and one certainly wants review to appear in the EVF to eliminate the EVF blackout after exposure.

5. Lenses over 50 mm have no profile to speak of… User created profiles for longer lenses in-camera are useless marketing at best and deteriorated file quality at worst.

One usability issue I have is that when adjusting ISO, I'd like the ISO value to be visible in the rangefinder window - it is during the 'power up ISO display' period. I find in strong sunlight I can't read the LCD, so the only work-around is to power the camera off and on again to get it into the 'power up ISO display' mode.

Current behaviour is inconstant with the EV compensation which displays the compensation whilst adjusting.

what I meant by 'making sure of the button press'- is that when you are used to the m8 and m9 as i am- you naturally move your head away from the VF- press play and look at the screen. Only on the M when you do this it plays in the finder and the screen is blank. Sometimes you forget this and press play again- hoping it will appear in the LCD. It doesn't so you press the button on the EVF- only now it isn't playing in there anymore- because you pressed it twice- so you have to look in to see where you are at. The result is looking in- looking out- confusion. Sure one can and will adapt- but that doesn't mean it is an ideal situation. And as for a technical requirement: I can't see that being the case at all. I dpon't see any reason why the camera cannot play the image on the LCD first- and in the EVF only if such an option is selected in the menu.

"User created profiles for longer lenses in-camera are useless marketing at best..."

Not so: corrections may well be useless but recording what lens you used in the Metadata is NOT useless. For the longer lenses I would want to create profiles just for the Metadata- no corrections required. And in any case: why make a quibble here? I take it you accept that all lenses below 50mm could do with a correction profile and also that Leica should continue to code and profile for the longer than 50mm lenses? Or is that just 'useless marketing' on Leicas behalf?
