lct Posted April 4, 2014 Share #41 Posted April 4, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) What I don’t understand is why anyone with a M body would want to shoot with a standard length R lens... Aside from rejuvenating a good old tool/toy , a zoom lens may be useful to do video.

jaapv Posted April 4, 2014 Share #42 Posted April 4, 2014 What I don’t understand is why anyone with a M body would want to shoot with a standard length R lens. Using the RF with a 35 or 50 M lens is almost intuitive, as well as being compact. I can understand using the R-M adapter and EVF for long lenses. As I don’t have a M, just a M9, M6TTL and M2, maybe I just don’t get it. OK I do have 2 DMRs for my long glass. Handholding a 280/4 or a 180/2 on the M seems ludicrous, although these balance really well on the DMR. They balance quite well on the M too, Charlie.Look in the photo forums for handheld long-lens M shots

I'm not interested in lenses longer than 135mm and I agree that I would not buy a fixed focal length R lens to use within the range of M lenses available for all of the obvious reasons. I only wanted the 28PC and 28-90 Vario-Elmar as there are times when having the zoom is very convenient and there's certainly no compromise with respect to image quality. There are also many who would have spectacular R-primes within this range of focal lengths who would probably rather use them - for example the 80 Summilux-R - rather than trade at greater cost for the 75 Summilux-M. The tradeoff with respect to size, weight, and the EVF may still be well worthwhile.

MarkP Posted April 5, 2014 Share #45 Posted April 5, 2014 Mark How do you find the 28PC functions on the M? Interesting question as I was just been testing it out again last week and I am still deciding whether to keep it. As a standard lens it is not as good as to the 28 Summicron-M ASPH with respect to resolution, sharpness, colour and overall just whether I am pleased with the look of resulting photograph. And it's big and heavy. But the perspective correction is just magic, and far better than post-processing corrections (unless only very minor in which case I don't think one would appreciate the difference). It can also be used horizontally to take two photographs at opposite shift directions and overlapping them (but cropping out the corners to preserve overall image quality) for one large panoramic view. When shifted to, or near to the extreme, the corners are unusable (really need to be removed) due to very bad smearing/blurring but are fine with small corrections. Really only a tripod lens but I have taken it out and used it just as a standard 28mm. Much easier to use with live view than on the M9, and I preferred using the EVF to the rear screen. sharookh Posted April 7, 2014 Author Share #46 Posted April 7, 2014 I was not aware you wanted a lens for street shooting. If I had been aware of that, I would have suggested a non-R lens. I travel quite a bit and there are times I walk the streets with my camera. Rather than carry my 35/50/75 lenses together, the new adapter allows me to carry one lens that covers all these focal lengths. I'm comfortable with the EVF, so this rig works for me. The MATE M is also a good choice and in EXIF data shows which FL was used which I find much better than the WATE or any R lens which only shows the smallest FL number of the lens no matter what FL is actually used.
