Advertisement Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Hi paul chiu, Take a look here Black or Silver?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Tonki-M Posted March 14, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 14, 2014 both are tough, but black will wear more gracefully than silver. Plus, for someone looking for heavy use, black is much less conspicuous.
paul chiu Posted March 14, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted March 14, 2014 my M8 was black and M9 was silver. I do notice fine nicks and scratches on the top panel of the M8 where in room lighting cannot see with M9. outdoors, i cannot see anything. Has the coating on the M240 changed since? both are tough, but black will wear more gracefully than silver. Plus, for someone looking for heavy use, black is much less conspicuous. schmolinski Posted March 14, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 14, 2014 I have had M8.2, M9 and now own the M. I would say from my experience they haven't changed it.
photolandscape Posted March 14, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2014 I believe the silver finish tends to be tougher and more resistant to wear than the black paint on the M240.
edwardkaraa Posted March 16, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 16, 2014 I initially wanted silver, but when I tried both at the shop, I realized the silver finish gets dirty easily. Also the shutter button on the body I was trying was quite stiff so this tipped the balance to the black. This said, the silver body does look amazingly beautiful. marknorton Posted March 16, 2014 Share #7 Posted March 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) No question at all that the silver chrome wears better than black.
farnz Posted March 16, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 16, 2014 No question at all that the silver chrome wears better than black. My experience as well. Pete.
viramati Posted March 16, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 16, 2014 Chrome will obviously wear better than black paint but at the end of the day they both take the same pictures. I suppose if you like the worn look and feel that is more 'cool' go for black. If your thinking of resale and what is going to 'probably' look better after heavy use go for chrome:)
genefama Posted March 17, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 17, 2014 I have a black M9 and a silver M240. The silver seems tougher. It also seems less conspicuous, contrary to what you always hear. "Pro' cameras are usually black and the silver looks more like a funky, non-threatening antique. Also, silver is closer in value to my skin, so it doesn't stick out as much when I put it in front of my face. The thing that makes a camera inconspicuous isn't that it blends into the shadows, but that it blends in with you, especially when you're sighting through it at someone. Herr Barnack Posted March 21, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 21, 2014 Now that I give it some thought, chrome would be more resistant to normal wear than black paint. You can have a black paint M camera repainted, though. Everyone seems to think that a black M camera is less conspicuous than a chrome M. If the photographer is wearing a black jacket or shirt and the camera has a black strap on it, that would seem to be true. When it comes to which is less conspicuous when held up to your shooting eye - well, it depends. Perhaps for a light skinned person, a chrome M is less conspicuous against their face. The camera still has a black leatherette covering, though. Perhaps for a person with a very dark skin tone, a black M could possibly be less conspicuous when pressed against the face. In the end, this may all amount to hair splitting or photographer's OCD, as the front of the camera's top plate which the subject sees measures 7/8 inch x 5 7/16 inches. Chrome or black, these cameras represent a sizable investment; therefore use them but take care to not drop, dent, bang, drag, abrade or scratch your M. That's just common sense IMHO. Moral of the story: If you like chrome, get chrome. If you like black paint, get black paint. If you agonize over this choice, get one of each. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind. paul chiu Posted March 21, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted March 21, 2014 Does this mean you get more metal with a silver? The black is lighter. Ken Rockwell said:
earleygallery Posted March 21, 2014 Share #20 Posted March 21, 2014 A solid silver M body would be nice. I must enquire with my jeweller if he can fashion me one.
