I live about 90 minutes south of Tokyo, though I travel there fairly often. My day job is a Japanese translator so I can speak the language and read it. I know the camera stores in Tokyo pretty well. I am happy to help if necessary.

Cheers.

Ryan

Good Morning Dan,

Any news about the date etc for the Japan Challenge yet?

Rgds

Christoph

Hi Christoph

We are currently looking at Saturday 23rd May 2015 for the One Challenge, and hope to plan some events in the week prior to that as well. Dan and myself are working on an agenda at the moment and should have something online very shortly.

Simon and Dan,

Have you settled on a location in Japan yet so we can start to plan flights etc please?

Pete.

Hi Pete

We have a preliminary schedule and I will be meeting with Dan tomorrow evening to hopefully finalize it all.

Apologies for the delay....

Dan and myself have been discussing potential schedules for the Asia LeicaOne trip and have come up with the following preliminary plan. With the exception of the stuff that needs a bit of organising (like a train trip between Tokyo and Kyoto) we are flexible on the other plans, and also open to suggestions:

Our intention is to run the ‘Challenge’ on May 23rd 2015 in Kyoto (location to be decided, but possibly starting near the train station). As such a trip would be more than just a weekend trip for most people, our thought was to organise some informal events in the preceding week as well.

We thought that it would be practical to fly into Tokyo and out of Kyoto (or other airport - as most airlines will allow you to purchase "open jaw" tickets at a comparible price with a different arrival and departure airport). This plan allows us to acclimatise to Japan in Tokyo, take in some sights/experiences there and then move onto Kyoto later in the week. Kyoto has been suggested by a number of interested members as a prefered challenge location.

Here's roughly what we are considering:

Sunday 17th May: Yoyogi Park & Harajuku

Monday 18th May: Tokyo Temples

Tuesday 19th May: Shinjuku/Ginza camera shopping :) Visit to Leica Gallery

Wednesday 20th May: Fish market (morning)

Thursday 21st May: Train to Kyoto (a 2.5 hour journey, depending on the train chosen)

Friday 22nd May: Kyoto Temples (oh, and maybe this too Leica Store Kyoto on Vimeo)

Saturday 23rd May: First Leica Asia Challenge (afternoon)

I will most likely arrive in Japan earlier than the 17th to visit relatives and Dan is planning to either arrive earlier or depart later.

Just to make clear that all we are doing is making suggestions. We are not a travel agency, and are not arranging hotels or taking any money :) Dan, Ritsuko (Dan’s wife), Kyoko (my partner), Tabatha (my daughter) and myself will definitely be there, and will be happy for people to join us when we make these trips and to help you out whilst you are there with our local knowledge of Tokyo and the Japanese culture.

How does this sound to everyone who is thinking about coming? We are open to suggestions and happy to hear your comments. We will be buying our tickets soon around these dates.

Simon, Dan, Kyoko, and Ritsuko,

Thanks very much for your planning on this and from a layman's point of view it sounds like an excellent proposal. I'm a definite potential starter providing that I can arrange the time away from work, of which I'm confident at this stage although, alas, things beyond our control sometimes change unexpectedly.

I'm looking forward to the Asia One Challenge Sojourn immensely and the prospect of seeing both Tokyo and Kyoto is just an added bonus. You've proposed a train journey between Tokyo and Kyoto, could that be the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) if desired?

Pete.

Hi Pete,

The Shinkansen would certainly be the fastest way, and that is what the 2.5 hour journey time is based upon. But of course being the fastest way also makes it a bit more expensive than the slower regional trains. Depending on the amount of train travel that is planned, it can make sense to buy a Japan Rail Pass which provides unlimited train travel for 7, 14, or 21 days, but this can only be purchased from outside of Japan by visitors in advance. More details at http://www.insidekyoto.com/japan-rail-pass-is-it-worth-it, although I'm not sure if the prices mentioned are current, and here http://en.japantravel.com/view/kyoto-to-tokyo-by-any-means

We are still interested, the only problem is that I need to be back in the UK on the 25th as I leave on another trip on the 28th.

As Tokyo is such a big city it may make sense to look at staying in the same hotel, or at least in the same area. I usually stay at the Dai-Iche Hotel Annex which is a great location (10 minute walk to Ginza) and our agent in Japan gets a good rate there. (If it's of interest I could see if the local company would be prepared to book numerous rooms.)

Same probably goes for Kyoto, especially for people who haven't visited Japan before.

As you probably know you don't need to book the Shinkansen as they leave about every ten/fifteen minutes from Tokyo.

Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom,

You'll be fine with the dates around your other trip. Flying out of Osaka may give you even more time or arrive in Tokyo earlier for some extra time.

We'd consider staying at the same hotel and suggesting others in the area. There many different styles of accomodation in Japan with very different personalities.

See you there :)

Gentlemen,

Veronique and I have booked but I fear we'll arrive only in the nick of time. Our plane will arrive in Tokyo at 8:30 am; and then we still need to find our way to Kyoto ... (Circumstances prevented us to leaving Europe any earlier...). In the worst case we should arrive in time for dinner [emoji4].

Tips for Hotels in both Tokyo and Kyoto would be welcome, Tom your offer may well be of interest.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Christoph

That's great news Christoph. Are you saying you are arriving on the 23 May? If you sleep on the plane and catch a train first thing in Tokyo, you'll be in Kyoto for the afternoon.
