M9reno Posted February 19, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Use the discreet mode, tuck the camera under your jacket, release, and you won't hear anything louder than an M3.
jcraf Posted February 19, 2014 Share #8 Posted February 19, 2014 The sound of the MM shutter, is, in my view, less colourful than that of the M9.
jaapv Posted February 19, 2014 Share #9 Posted February 19, 2014 I actually think the MM is a teeny bit quieterThere has always been a bit of individual variation between cameras, but from the M8.2 upwards the sound has been unchanged (except of course the M) The quietest one I had was my original M8 after upgrade. FrozenInTime Posted February 20, 2014 Share #11 Posted February 20, 2014 Use the discreet mode, tuck the camera under your jacket, release, and you won't hear anything louder than an M3. Quieter because the MM has locked up - discrete mode random freeze
becker Posted February 20, 2014 Share #12 Posted February 20, 2014 No, my first gen. 9 sounds totally different and louder than the MM. May be its because in a manufacture no piece looks like the other Seems the shutter has got an upgrade.
250swb Posted February 20, 2014 Share #13 Posted February 20, 2014 The best thing is not to care what it sounds like, then you won't hear it at all. If you focus your attention on even the smoothest and quietest M3 shutter it will start to sound loud and irritating eventually. The M9/MM shutter out in the landscape isn't as loud as the song of a bird, it isn't as loud as the trickle of a stream, so why judge it when its three inches from your ear? And in the city even the rustle of a newspaper and a distant car alarm will drown the shutter sound if you aren't focusing your attention on it. marknorton Posted February 20, 2014 Share #14 Posted February 20, 2014 Unless Leica has been forced to upgrade the design because of a parts shortage, I think differences may be down to manufacturing spread. It's the same basic design as an M8/M9/M9-P and M-E after all. It will be interesting to see whether a monochrome version of the M is brought out given the MM has likely been much more successful than they expected. profus Posted February 20, 2014 Share #15 Posted February 20, 2014 I actually think the MM is a teeny bit quieter When I was playing with MM and comparing it to my M9 I had the same feeling and I also asked Leica representative if that was the case. He said no, but I would still say it is a teeny bit quiter - at least to my ears...

FrozenInTime Posted February 21, 2014 Share #18 Posted February 21, 2014 My M9, M9-P and MM all sound similar; but there are slight variations between them - mainly with the re-cocking: click here to play the audio recordings of each via soundcloud All taken with at 1/60s with the same lens, a 50mm Summilux , battery and memory card. The cameras were tripod mounted on a RRS plate which stayed locked in the same position with each body being swapped in turn. The Sennheiser MKH40 microphone was also mounted on second tripod , suspended on a Sennheiser MZS20-1 mount 30cm away from the cameras. Welcome, dear visitor! Jeff S Posted February 21, 2014 Share #20 Posted February 21, 2014 My M9, M9-P and MM all sound similar; but there are slight variations between them - mainly with the re-cocking: I wonder if everyone is discussing the same issue. For me the shutter sound itself is just fine on every digital M camera; it's just the awful re-cocking buzz that irritates on each iteration prior to the new M. [The shutter release is also smoother on the new M, not just the sound issue.] Of course this doesn't matter a twit when it comes to making pics, but like Mark N., I wonder about an MM based on the new platform. Unfortunately this benefit might be more than offset by controversy over sensor (if CMOS), video, etc. Jeff
