I was out on an outdoor shoot yesterday which I started on 60%, no dramas as I knew I’d be fine for juice. I will buy a spare battery but haven’t got round to it yet.

I keep the camera on with 2 mins auto power off, no LV and very little chimping. This is how I prefer to shoot and with auto ISO up to 1600Max, no use of menus etc. I set shutter speed and aperture manually, so a little time getting the metering right, but more often than not, pre-dialled in close enough so fairly kind to the battery.

At the end of the shoot which lasted 3 hours, I had a bit of time previewing images, binning a few that I didn’t need and my battery was showing 30%.

I’ve recently purchased a ‘soft-touch’ button for my leica. I’d been walking round all afternoon with the camera round my neck so put it back in the bag for a few hours (was still switched on). When I pulled the camera out later, there was 1 black photo and the camera was mildly warm... odd I thought. Seems as though it had been resting on the soft-touch button enough to fire off one shot, but also to keep the camera from powering down. This completely drained my battery. Note to self here about putting the camera in the bag, switched on.

I removed the soft-touch button and threw it in the bin. Not a show-stopper situation, obviously, but not one I want to repeat. I’ll also make sure the camera is turned off before placing in the back for any length of time.

Other than this episode which I consider fully my error, the battery on the M is great. Lasts like my Canon 1DS batteries used to, very good.

I'm so conservative with my shots that I barely ever run below 75% before I decide to just charge my battery again. I would be totally cool with spending a few days away from a charger with this camera.

I don't use Advanced Metering anymore and only use live view a little during landscape photography, but even then I still get home with most of the battery left.

That's with my original 3 year old battery!

Bringing this older post to attention again. I am also looking for a spare BP- SCL2 battery for my M240 but I couldn't find any third party alternative out there for this type. This Leica battery still goes for about $200 new. Can anybody share insights or a link to a third party manufacturer if it even exists?

Never heard of third party alternatives sorry.

This confirms my result. Maybe Leica has this battery design patent-protected hindering third party manufacturers to replicate it. Well, with dropping M10 prices hopefully those battery prices will also come down more.

Battery life on my m262 is such a joy after the dreadful performance on my olympus pen ep-5 camera.

Its a massive priority for me,much more important than megapixels and slightly slimmer body size .

There are so few sold compared to other batteries it wouldn’t be lucrative to clone a battery for an M camera.

Hmm, the M240/262 series sold in numbers similar to the M10 I guess. But yes, quantity is overall much smaller compared to a Sony or Fuji MLC.

I bought an ME240 July 2019 as I had received some PPI compensation and thought a second Leica M body might be useful with my unexpected windfall. Anyway I fireed away with my ME240 and M262 and have never run out of battery power yet. I think about 50% s the lowest I have reached.
