Owning a Leica M in Panama, warranty?

Hi All,

I'm a current owner of a Canon 5D3 an RX1 and many L primes and I've always been intrigued all things Leica. I've been a lurker for quite a while, but I've only actually touched an M9 once (took one picture).

I got the RX1 abroad and didn't even think about the warranty. But it seems that for things Leica (M240) I'm better off getting it. The issue is, I live in Panama, and we don't have anything Leica. I could get the camera in the U.S. but would I be able send in the camera and/or lenses if I need warranty repairs? I really don't travel to the U.S. that much, maybe once a year.

Thanks!

Leica calls it a Passport Warranty. You might be lucky to get a new M240 at the Leica Store in Miami. I am not affiliated with them.

Email Josh or Peter to inquire. Or PM me and I can ask them to send you an email. Peter is fluent in Spanish if that might help. They have every lens in stock at the store so the only wait would be for the camera body, but in a few more months the waiting list should be about exhausted.

I know other US dealers who can perhaps get you one faster, like the Leica Store Wash, DC. PM me and I could help you with that store also. I am not affiliated with that store either.

Hello Chito.

Welcome to the forum.

I have owned Leica's since 1973 and still use them on occasions with slide film, must admit I love them.

However IN MY PERSONAL VIEW their digital versions are HOPELESS, so ovoid them at this time untill they (Solms) get their act together.

Stick with your Canon, recently I have switched to Canon for my digital needs and have not regretted it.

Good luck.

Ken.

WOW  I am guessing that a few folks here would disagree with your view. I for one do. None of my 6 bodies have ever been hopeless.

Are you sure, Ken, you have tried a digital LEICA long enough to be in a position for such a statement?

Did you return to slidephotography too soon and before you could discover what a digital LEICA-M can do for your photography?

Did you ever use one or is it just hearsay about lacking reliability you are repeating?

Of course, a LEICA-M camera is not for everyone and if you are happy with your Canon, stay tune.

Nobody will be bothered.

GEORG

1.... I have never left Slide photography, all my Leica cameras are the film models.

2... Yes played and borrowed the M9 and the M240 to primitive for me.

3... Don't care if anybody is bothered, Canon makes a superiour product their auto focusing and image stabilizing technology is simply amazing, and I cannot complain about their lens image quality either.

My responce was for Chito, why in heavens does he want to step backwards from his Canon 5D-3.

When Leica decides to make a decent Digital Camera, I will concider it.

Ken.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm actually still on the fence on this, I have owned all three generations of the 5D and even if I do eventually get the M240 I don't think I'd be able to part with the Canon just yet, mostly because of the 70-200 f2.8L IS II... which I consider is the best zoom lens in existence. Also the 100L macro, both have 4 stops of Image Stabilization, which is a lifesaver on those focal lengths.

I guess my main reasons are size and weight. My most used lenses, the 35L and the 50L are just too heavy (when I travel I take my primes). I've had to switch from a shoulder bag to a backpack just to make all day walking bearable. And what is probably my favorite lens.. the 85LII on its own it weighs as much as the M240 paired with a 50 Summilux. (If I do take it out, it has to be for an occasion).

I got the RX1 to satiate my Leica craze an alleviate my back, but the AF is just-too-slow, point and shoot slow. I didn't think it was going to bother me that much but it really is only a camera for things that aren't moving.

With the coming A7r I was intrigued, yet some things are becoming apparent to me.

Full frame lenses are never going to get smaller (or better, unless you count the Otus, which looks like the size of my arm) than Leica M lenses. All the others will require autofocus motors and maybe image stabilization mechanisms.

And the M 240 is optimized for M lenses, with those raised micro lenses to catch the incident light angles. I've already seen some reports that indicate that the A7r is soft once you start moving away from the center (this in regards to M lenses, even the 50 summilux). This incident light problem is even present in current Canikon cameras, when paired with fast primes, yet what they do secretly raise the ISO of the corners to compensate.

The 5D is certainly better at certain things, it's more versatile. Nobody even questions its reliability, it starts up instantly, it's fast, dual cards, I've used it in the pouring tropical rain and it even has a very quite discreet mode. And if I was birder/nature photographer, war photographer, sports photographer or macro shooter then it would hands down be the better choice.

You’ll not do so anymore after trying the 105-280 Vario-Elmar 4.2. Maybe not as fast and no IS, so a bit short on low-light capability, but as soon as you have the light it sure beats the Canon- which I have owned and used a lot.:)
