kdriceman Posted December 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday while shooting with my M 240 and 35mm Summicron, the lens suddenly became physically blocked from reaching infinity focus. In fact it would only allow focus to about 3 meters. It felt as though something was physically blocking the focus tab from moving further. I inspected it, fiddled with it, rotated the focus back and forth, but it wouldn't go past the 3m mark, so I took the lens off, looked inside the body and this little gem fell out of the body. I replaced the lens and it began focusing properly, although I didn't test the accuracy of infinity focus. Upon further inspection it appears that this came from the bottom of the rangefinder mechanism and must be the rangefinder stop/infinity adjustment screw (? - it has an offset cam on the top of the screw). I don't know. I'm interested to see if this has happened to others on the forum and if you can tell me what it is. No doubt, the camera will now be making another trip to Leica NJ. It spent the month of October there getting vertical rangefinder alignment sorted out... Now this little screw/cam drops out of the body... Coincidence? Thanks for the help. Welcome, dear visitor! kdriceman Posted December 9, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted December 9, 2013 kd, it took them a month to adjust the vertical rangefinder alignment!? sorry to hear about the 'new' problem as well. hopefully the second trip to NJ will successful and uneventful. In fairness to Leica NJ, the month includes 3-4 days shipping each way, but yes, I was without the camera for about a month. That is ok and Leica NJ is good to work with. My issue is that I got the camera new in September and noticed immediately the rangefinder images did not line up vertically. Now, this is going to take probably a month to get it back - again, a factory QC issue probably, although if NJ was in there adjusting things, one has to wonder if they did not appropriately tighten or at least check this little screw. I had my M9 for 2 years, 12,000 actuations and the only time I sent it in was at the 2 year mark to get one last warranty adjustment before the warranty expired. I feel fortunate that I found this (I think) before the screw rattled around inside body while I carried it around for a day or so. I would like to get angry and say I'm going to get rid of the camera and get an A7, but I honestly really like the M and don't want to replace it with an A7. I like the way it handles better than my Nex and I like the images better than what I am seeing with the A7's. And although I've used the EVF and focus peaking a great deal with the Nex system, I just don't enjoy it like I do a rangefinder. Oh well... such is life with a Leica. Marac Posted December 10, 2013 Share #7 Posted December 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good Lord!!! bring back the M8 all is forgiven, in fact, where is my DMR & R9 combo that was heaven compared to what is happening lately. what has happened to you is totally unacceptable and could of also damaged the rear element of your lens into the bargain. I have never seen this before so let us hope it remains an isolated incident. I have just sent back my 2nd M240 for the same problem and have a loan camera from the Leica shop in Mayfair London (that has the same ISO640 line issue) but maybe next time (god forbid) you could ask for a loan camera so at least you can still work. algrove Posted December 11, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 11, 2013 Never heard of Leica NJ offering loaner cameras. They do send everything back blue label unless they are late and then it can be faster sometimes. Nevertheless, this is not a good situation to say the least! tobey bilek Posted December 11, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 11, 2013 You are fortunate the screw did not get into the shutter like film chips can do. Remember film?
wda Posted December 11, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 11, 2013 This is seriously worrying news. Do keep us updated on the outcome.
kdriceman Posted December 11, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted December 11, 2013 You are fortunate the screw did not get into the shutter like film chips can do. Remember film? Agree. I feel lucky that it seems to have jammed the lens first and I found it. That being said, I can't be sure it didn't do other damage. I boxed it up (in the same box Leica service sent it to me in just a few weeks ago) and shipped it off (using my Leica Service quick profile in FedEx). I did ask for "Accelerated" service given the fact that they had just adjusted the rangefinder last month. Will keep you posted.
k-hawinkler Posted December 11, 2013 Share #12 Posted December 11, 2013 Good luck! I am glad I turned down my M.
jplomley Posted December 11, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 11, 2013 Major bummer. Glad I've stuck with the M9. Only other M I am considering is the MM, and that should be a pretty safe bet as a matured architecture. Afterall, the components date back to 2003 do they not
k-hawinkler Posted December 11, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 11, 2013 But for the firmware! Isn't it still in beta status?
otto.f Posted December 11, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 11, 2013 kd, it took them a month to adjust the vertical rangefinder alignment!? . One month is a luxury. In Solms you wait at least 5 weeks for whatever. It is not the work, it is the waiting list, which was considerably shorter one year ago. When Leica sells more, they repair more
Stealth3kpl Posted December 11, 2013 Share #16 Posted December 11, 2013 I'm sorry you're being inconvenienced by Leica's inadequate quality control. However, we can all gain some solace knowing that they aren't just any old parts falling out of your camera, but Leica parts; the finest parts, and hand assembled. Symeon Posted December 16, 2013 Share #17 Posted December 16, 2013 Totally unacceptable for a camera that costs so much money?
jaapv Posted December 16, 2013 Share #18 Posted December 16, 2013 I'm sure Leica agrees. But why should it be acceptable on a cheaper camera?
jip Posted December 16, 2013 Share #19 Posted December 16, 2013 I'm happy my Leica has non of the weirdness! Hasn't even had a lockup yet. *knocks wood*
kdriceman Posted December 18, 2013 Author Share #20 Posted December 18, 2013 The camera is in NJ. Carmen notified me that it will be repaired under warranty and will be done in January, 2014. The service dept will be closed for a week between Christmas and New Years. 3-6 weeks depending on what "January, 2014" means.
