Guest Gilgamesh Posted November 28, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) 8 seconds. That's how long it takes my camera to start-up. Well done Leica. My Nikon D800e is all but instant. Well done Leica. If only they would concentrate on getting the gear they manufacture the best possible with no glitches (it's not like it's inexpensive) and not taking their collective eyes off the proverbial ball, chasing company take-overs none of really care about. Stick to the core business Leica, make the cameras work properly and cease messing about because 8 seconds is simply unacceptable in any language. Advertisement Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Hi Guest Gilgamesh, Take a look here Start-up time. Anyone got a longer wait than mine?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mirekti Posted November 28, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 28, 2013 Something is really wrong here. I'd try with different SD cards, and in case the time remains the same you'll obviously have to send it to Solms.
01af Posted November 28, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 28, 2013 With a SanDisk SDHC Extreme, my M (Typ 240) takes four seconds to start up—or to wake up from auto power-off. With a SanDisk SDHC Extreme Pro, it took three seconds initially and now 2.5 seconds after having formatted the card with SD Formatter 4.0. Unfortunately, my older Extreme card doesn't seem to respond to being formatted with SD Formatter. Two point five seconds still is outrageously long—but at least it's not four seconds ... or <gasp!> eight.
chris_tribble Posted November 28, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2013 What am I doing right? I'm consistently around 2 seconds with a range of Sandisk SDHC cards (16 and 32 GB). The main trick seems to be to use SD Formatter as 01af says. I was unhappy with startup when I was involved in testing the M, but as soon as I started to format cards this way it ceased to be an issue.
jaapv Posted November 28, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 28, 2013 1,4 second, measured by both Lindolfi and me. The variations reported in this forum are weird, and nobody has been able to establish a pattern. Try faster, smaller cards. 16 or 8 Mb is ample for most users. (Not all, I know...) algrove Posted November 28, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 28, 2013 With Sandisk SDHC Extreme Pro (32GB) and not using SD Formatter I get between 2 and 3 seconds. With the above results I now consider it a non-issue.
lct Posted November 28, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two seconds average startup time so far. See my spreadsheet attached. Format your card with SD Formatter if you get longer times. http://tinyurl.com/kp8qe83
mirekti Posted November 28, 2013 Share #8 Posted November 28, 2013 I am using Lexar Professoinal SDXC 64GB 400x Speed. I hold the shutter button, and power on the camera. I press the stopwatch start at the same time as I start moving the switch from off to s position. Once I hear the shutter I press the stopwatch, and I get 1.6 seconds. chris_tribble Posted November 28, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2013 The results that Mirekti and Lct report are spot on from where I stand. 7 seconds? I'd check a different card + DEFINITELY format it using SD Formater.
Dannybuoy Posted November 28, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 28, 2013 1.5 seconds for me. 8 seconds sounds suspect.
Naper Posted November 28, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2013 Start up for me is 2 sec. Before you blame your camera eliminate the variables. Reset your camera to the factory default settings. Remove the SD card, It will start up and operate without a card. Now time the start up. If it is still 8 sec chances are its your camera if its around 2 seconds your problem is your SD card or your settings. You could then try different cards or formatting techniques. Change your settings one at a time and test after each change. This will take some time but it will be faster than sending your camera in for repair. Guest borge Posted November 28, 2013 Share #15 Posted November 28, 2013 1. Purchased the M Typ 240 new. 2. Charged the battery. 3. Inserted a brand new and formatted with the latest version of SDFormatter Sandisk Extreme Pro SDXC 64GB 95mb/s. 4. Updated the firmware to the latest version (included on the SD card). 5. Formatted the card in the camera. 6. Used the camera as usual straight away, and have taken over 1500 shots since that time. Result: Wait time when I turn the camera on: Not noticeable / instant. Wait time from sleep/auto power off: Not noticeable, instant. I would get a new memory card or format your existing ones with SDFormatter, and reset the camera and also make sure that the latest firmware version is installed. 8 seconds is not normal. As others suggested: Remove the memory card and see if that helps. If it does, it's you card - not the camera. If not - reset your camera to factory settings. And if that doesn't help then contact Leica CS and send the camera back.
paulsydaus Posted November 28, 2013 Share #16 Posted November 28, 2013 My experience matches that of Borge's above. Startup time appears to comply with Leica's stated 1s, though I haven't measured it. It could be as long as 1.5s but definitely not longer. I also set the sleep time to 10 minutes. Overall in classic mode everything is very snappy, though shutter lag still a fraction slower than my film camera, it's nonetheless perfectly acceptable. Something is definitely not right with the OP...
lct Posted November 29, 2013 Share #17 Posted November 29, 2013 Would you mind to measure your startup times the way suggested in the link below? Aside from very small cards, i've never got less than 1.7 sec with the fastest cards available personally. http://tinyurl.com/kp8qe83
Guest jvansmit Posted November 29, 2013 Share #18 Posted November 29, 2013 Mine's under 2 secs with 32GB Sandisk SDHC Extreme Pro. And, unlike my MM, I've never had a freeze .
jdlaing Posted November 29, 2013 Share #19 Posted November 29, 2013 A little less than two seconds. It took me a few times to measure it correctly.
Guest Gilgamesh Posted November 29, 2013 Share #20 Posted November 29, 2013 I'll do as suggested and get back to you as it was never this long in the past (May 2013+). All but one of my cards are the same, so I'll experiment with each first, then re-format using the SD software. As I say, I'll report back my findings here shortly……… After three cards, 8 seconds, 4 seconds and 2.5 seconds. All ScanDisk Ultras. So there must in deed be something in this as regards the card, what's on it and how it's formatted (usually in-camera). More info to follow………
