rborden Posted November 7, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received my New M yesterday. I'm wanting to buy a Polarizer, and $500 for a Leica polarizer seems a bit excessive. Could I just purchase a good old fashioned polarizer and not use the viewfinder, opting instead for the EVF2. Any thoughts? Ron

01af Posted November 7, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 7, 2013 I just received my new M yesterday. Congratulations! I'm wanting to buy a polarizer, and $500 for a Leica polarizer seems a bit excessive. No, it doesn't seem a bit excessive. It is excessive! Could I just purchase a good old-fashioned polarizer and not use the viewfinder, opting instead for the EVF 2? Yes, sure you can. Personally, I am using a Heliopan High-Transmission Polariser 77 mm on adapter rings (in particular, Heliopan 91000380 and Heliopan 91000381). If you plan to use classic light metering then the polariser should be circular—even though most people will falsely tell you that a linear polariser will do. But in fact it won't—not if you're picky with accurate light metering. However if you're using advanced light metering (as it is typical with live-view) then the polariser might just as well be linear. Still, a circular polariser also is useful if you're planning to use it on (D)SLR lenses, too. In any case, live-view makes it easy to control the polarising effect, so the excessively-priced Leica M Polarising Filter is not required.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted November 8, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 8, 2013 I just use a normal polariser. I use B&W but I'm sure others are as good. You can tell when a polariser is close to maximum polarisation because the exposure will change a half stop. Then adjust to taste. You can just chimp if you feel the need. jip Posted November 8, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2013 I have the Leica version, rarely use it... the only upside is that I can use it on either the E46 lenses and E39 lenses... and of course that you don't need to use live view... Bought it second hand for about 290 euro... I must say the picture I did use it with have come out particularly nice!

I see that they are still made and B&H has them for $549. You could buy several B+W sizes for that and they are certainly more convenient. My M arrives today. I have one of the universal contraptions that I will still use. I bought it over 10 years ago.

Bill W Posted November 8, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, I know I will. You are always a bit nervous given the issues folks are experiencing but I was also an early adopter of the M8 and then the M9. I never had problems with either but I am not as heavy a user as others either.
