What do you want in the next digital M?

Simple? Having to use 4 (why not 2?) unlabelled (why not invisible?) buttons is the exact contrary of simplicity for me. And it proves that my favorite (so far) camera brand considers a camera as a tool that i'm supposed to make special efforts to adapt to it instead of adapting to me. Thanks no thanks but YMMV.

Simple, because I'd rather know where to put my fingers and thumbs than have to read a label first. I agree, no buttons at all would be simplest. But I sold my M3 to buy an M9 :)

One of - or possibly the most important - reasons I bought into the M system was the pure simplicity the cameras deliver. An analogue camera that just happens to capture digital images. My nightmare would be extensive menus and long or short push 'blank' buttons.

Form over function.

God forfend.

The M3 had analogue controls at least. What you're describing is just a nighmare to me but again YMMV.

Oh I want traditional analogue controls. But as long as there are some electronic/digital settings, to access them I'd like the smallest number of buttons possible, plus the ability to find them without looking. I can't do that quickly with the M240's column of 6. And if I can find them without looking, than l don't need labels.

I am hoping the M Typ 240 successor will be in essence

- based on an M Typ 262 body (with lower weight, softer shutter and step on the top plate)

- include a updated sensor with improved high ISO performance and more dynamic range

- live View but no movie mode please (there are other cameras for that)

- a frame lever

I still wonder why anybody would want a camera that offers liveview and then cripple it for  potential users by denying a feature that does not take up anything and can be switched off...The use of video for some uses that are fully compatible with the concept (travel, reportage) has been explained often enough here. Esthetic sensibility? It is a tool, for ....sake.

Why limit a camera to one's own use without consideration for the wants of others? I never-ever use EV compensation, but that cannot be a call for it to be removed from a future camera in my book.

The problem is, in my opinion, the movie feature complicates the user interface in too many ways ... adding a dedicated physical button that can't be reassigned, menu options, microphone holes in top plate, holes in back etc. Hardly an unobtrusive implementation as when you turn off or just simply ignore the movie feature you're left with this interface 'junk'.

I would not have bought the M240 if it had not been for video, LV and EVF, just stuck to the M9, and I suspect I am not alone. Leica wants to sell cameras...

As I said, EV comp to me is junk, with a thumbwheel and menu options. So what? just ignore or use.

+10

Edit: I hardly use LV on M240 but then there are times when I use legacy SLR lenses for either fun (ex: different bokeh) or real use (longer zooms) and I don't need to carry another camera. When I had M9, then I had no choice but to have a second camera (Nex-6) for occasional use of longer lens and video. After moving to M240, initially I justified my second camera as having a backup and times when I can shoot two different FL at the same time. But now after one and half years of M240, I go out more and more with only my M, since I like it's sensor output and my Nex-6 gets almost no use. This is only because M240 is such a versatile camera. Take LV away and it becomes a M9 with minor refinements (maybe none for some).

I will be totally in favor of not adding functionality if it destroys, in the order, 1) Aesthetics and 2) Haptics. IMHO, M240 preserves both of it compared to M9.

How can anyone know that they won't ever want to record a movie? It beggars belief.

I see people wishing their Ms were not equipped to record movies. That they will not ever want to record a movie does not follow from that.

Correct... my most of the video come from iPhone even if I am using M. But then sometimes, I take video from M having shallow DOF which everyone I know go WOW... :) It is nice to have option.

I could live with M not having video but no LV is deal breakers for me. Fortunately both go hand in hand.

It's not about recording movies, it's about the right tool for the job.

Action or wet?   I'll use my GoPro (or any of the other 3 or 4 "action" cams gathering dust in my office).

Random stuff to go along with snapshots? My iPhone 6 does a good job.

Serious video?  My Canon 7D with appropriate lens and external audio

I strongly doubt I'll ever shoot video using my Q or the Lumix P&S I sometimes use.  My M is the 262 version.   Lack of video was not something that mattered when I bought it.

Now I've got over the new toy period with the SL and its magnificent lenses, I am using both M and SL fairly equally: the M for travelling light and casual ("going commando") and the SL for dedicated photo sessions or expeditions when I need its full control, reach and versatility ("weaponed-up").

I appreciate description, but in many areas of the US 'going commando' means you are not wearing underwear. :)

I have never used the video function on my M. However, I'm happy for it to be there for others. I would like the video button to be programmable but it isn't. And it doesn't stop me from using the camera as I like to.

Gordon

p.s. I think the SL layout with large buttons is easier to use. I don't need labels as I have them set exactly as I want.

Assuming that you will always be carrying all your additional tools around.
