it is very sad that Leica did not release a camera like this last May when we all thought they would. They have seriously missed the boat.

So what is Leica to do?

it seems to me that Leica has played this very badly.

Amen. Anything they bring to market now, in this vein, is going to look pretty poor. They had their chance and blew it.

This sounds how I wanted the M to be. 36MP is perfect and the M should have been that. Leica screwed up on this, IMO. I don't want to spend another £6K on an M, grip for a usb port and crappy evf and have a side step in quality and a bunch of features I could care less about.

I will definitely buy one to try it out. If the IQ stacks up and the lenses work well I will adapt them into my work. At that price you can have one body for every lens!

The sticking point for me is...it's not a Leica. It's not a Rangefinder. It won't have the same haptics and it won't feel as good using it. But who knows if that will mean anything once I have tried it out.

Leica better act quickly. I can't help but wonder about their future. I would rather shoot a Leica M but that, by its self, is not quite enough these days....

No lock. It has a tab.

So, for closeup work one would turn the helicoid one way and then use the focus ring on the lens.

Turning the helicoid the other way doesn't extend the adapter so that one can focus to infinity.

The helicoid seems to be stiff enough so that it stays in place.

It's easy to operate once camera and lens are attached.

I have adapters for Leica M, V, and R as well as Nikon F and G lenses to adapt to Sony E mount.

What I don't know is if all adapters are wide enough for FF so that they don't vignette any of my lenses.

All the adapters seem fine in this regard for APS-C size sensors.

Roger Cicala from LensRentals has studied the mis-alignment of many adapters and their effect on image quality.

A very interesting read indeed.

Thank you, Karl-Heinz for this.

I have M and F mount lenses (the two F mount lenses are AF-S lenses for my D800E, and they have no aperture control on the lens). I'm assuming that there is no adapter which will allow me to use the F mount lenses on the A7r ...

For the M mount lenses, I have the Novoflex adapter.

I know you spend a lot of time with adapters, and making things fit various cameras. Once you get your hands on an A7, it would be great for the rest of us if you would share your recommendations on adapters, and how to make which lenses fit the camera. The idea of using M lenses for close up work is very appealing, I'd have to say; and if I could use my AF-S 80-400 Nikkor zoom lens on the A7, I'd be stoked!

Cheers

John

Leica needs to bring the m240 size down to m6 proportions...obviously can be done..

Get some reliable electronics in there..

Bring price down to 3k to 4k..

Like that's gonna ever happen..hahaha..

But that's what they need to do..

must say the new Sony A7R looks pretty sweet.

I love my MM but any thoughts on how the A7R might effect M shooters?

anyone jumping ship to similar IQ, smaller, lighter, interchangeable lenses, cheaper.....

What advantages does the M have over A7R?

I still like the lack of clutter on the M bodies but if one does not have a collection of Leica glass already...

FWIW, here is a TOP post regarding potential issues with adapters (including a link to the already mentioned lensrentals article).

Jeff

I'm thinking that as Mike says at the end;

"just use cameras with the lenses that were designed to go with them."

might well be the case. It's Zeiss after all. And you get AF to boot! We'll see. I ordered the Zeiss 35. I'll test it and the A7r against the M & 35 cron. Then against the A7r and 35 cron with adaptor. The results (combined with A7r handling and performance) will determine if I stay with anything Leica.

Karl - Congratulations. This camera should be perfect for you. Depending on how easily my Leica M-lenses focus on this camera and, of course, absent any significant edge problems, this could be my camera as well.

Unlike you, I have no adapter in the drawer to use once I receive this camera. What adapter would recommend I order now so that I can use my M-lenses on the A7R once it arrives?

If the Leica M was 36MP and had this level of functionality and purposefulness and usability then I would have bought one when it came out and even now I would still pay £6K for the privilege. THAT is where they screwed up.

Where they need to pull their finger out of their arse is that they have two incredibly expensive systems in The M and the S which really aren't offering enough. THis new Sony is probably not so far off the d800 which is not far off the S. WHY would you buy an S or an M? Apart for some feel good factor? Apart from a very select few who only want to use rangefinder focussing?

They need to up their game, perhaps it's already too late. I'm placing an order for this camera for sure and if it works out then I will probably buy a couple more at that price. A body for each lens, in that small size, it's almost like having a zoom again. :D

New Sony: nice camera, I am sure but... I don't need it.

I have my New M and M9. Other bag, I have D800, all with proper lenses that I use. I really have no need for another 36mp camera. I don't print big. On the other hand I do stock regularly so with what I have now I am good for few years.

New cameras are/will be coming monthly. There will always be newest and greatest "gadget" and "Leica killer" or "DSLR killer"... Don't care! I love using both Leica and Nikon. Each system has it's purpose in my workflow.

Again, it's good that Sony is doing this. I am sure Fuji will follow in the spring with their armada of FF... Where does it stop? It stops with your wallet...:D

Another sample, this one full sized. Look at the incredible detail on the lapel of the coat where the point of focus is. This is Medium Format territory resolution and detail, for sure.

This is just mind blowing in this package with this price! THIS quality is what I was expecting from the Leica M.

Stump- I agree- caught my eye too- want to see, hold and feel the thing!! Tempting - looks sort of small- I really love the size and feel of my M9- can see the Sony as an add-on, not a replacement- but definitely a second go-to camera-

if you see one- let us know what its like!!

Now I understand.
Come on, dwbell, your sarcasm is tiresome. I meant the only non-Leica camera on which I used M-Lenses. I've shot with other digital cameras including the NikonD300, and have tried a friend's D800 and Canon 5DIII.
